Joseph Butler Obituary

Joseph Butler, whose stroke of paralysis at noon last Wednesday was mentioned in last week's Argo-Gazette, died the same evening about 5 o'clock. He died at the David Turner home in Windsor, where he had gone to attend a public sale. He was not able to speak again after he was stricken, although it is thought he was conscious and recognized Mrs. Butler when she arrived. Mr. Butler had a light stroke during the night of Sept. 1, but speedily recovered from its worst effects, and while his health was not fully restored the nature of his trouble was not generally known, hence his sudden death was a great shock to his wide circle of friends.
The funeral was held at 1:30 Friday afternoon from the Methodist church, conducted by Rev. W. E. Van Buren, assisted by Rev. C. E. Lownie. There was a great attendance, many persons driving from a distance.
Joseph Butler was born in Wisconsin on April 14, 1850. His parents came in July of the same year to Westfield Township, Fayette County, where he grew to manhood. He married Miss Clara Kelsey June 21. 1874. They came to West Union in 1878, and their home has been here ever since, with the exception of 5 years which were spent in California. He was in the grocery business about 25 years. He became a member of the Methodist church in May, 1911, and has since been predominately connected with its affairs. He is survived by his widow; also two brothers and two sisters, Mrs. Mary Finch of West Union, Mrs. Sarah Hough of Oelwein, John D Butler of West Union, and George Butler at Independence.
There are few if any men in West Union whose death would bring a sense of personal bereavement to so many people as did Mr. Butler's. He was a man who loved and was lovable. He delighted to move among "the kindly world of men" and no doubt the little journey which ended in his death was undertaken because it would give him a chance to mingle with friendly intercourse with his fellows. Although a successful businessman, he was not "prominent"; he never sought to be put in the public eye; yet he never hung back when asked to perform a duty; in fact his earnest untiring faithfulness in the performance of many tasks imposed upon him by his fellow members of the Methodist church has been the subject of much comment. The world is richer because this man lived, richer by a beautiful example of domestic devotion, an example of unremitting fidelity to duty, an example of kindness which made the world a pleasanter place for everyone who knew him.[2]
