Biography

Edward (Ned) Callahan was born in 1743, in Cumberland, Cumberland County, Virginia. His parents were Darby Callahan and Unity Harris. Mahala Mahala Susannah Brock (b: 1749 in Cumberland Co., VA) and Edward Callahan were married: 1773 in Montgomery Co., VA -- brought to Court for having bastard children out of wedlock, they were forced to marry on the spot.[1][2][3]

Mahala Susannah & her husband Edward "Ned" Callahan immigrated abt Dec 1801 to near Grapevine Creek, N. Fork of Kentucky River, Knox (now Perry) Co., KY, from Russell Co., VA; three children had married; they were joined by their sons-in-laws' Davidson, Strong, and Cornett families. [4]

The following account of the killing of Benge[5]

The following account of Edward "Ned" Callahan was printed in The Kentucky[6]

Story: Callahan, Edward - Notes:[7]

Ned passed away 13 MAR 1823, in Benge, Clay County, Kentucky. [8]

Research Notes

The following is unsupported by an contemporaneous record. There is nothing to suggest that "Aaron Brock" ever existed and the Cherokee man known as Red Bird had no known wife or children and was never called "Aaron Brock." "Deputy Chief Arlie Strong, a descendant of Aaron Brock's daughter Mahala who md. Edward "Ned" Callahan, is related to Chief Red Bird through Jim Bowling of the "Bear Creek" Bowlings in Clay Co., KY, and wife Martha "Patsy" Benge, daughter of John Benge. The Bowlings then married into the Wilson family (a Cherokee family through Henson), who married Elizabeth Strong, daughter of John Strong." [9]

"Edward was the son of Darby Callahan and Unity Harris." None of the following are primary sources. [10][11][12][13][14][15]

Do any of these sources confirm any of the children aside from Elizabeth Davidson? I looked through them all, but I couldn't find anything that confirmed if John was actually his son.

Profile managers, would one of you be willing to strengthen this profile's narrative into a single, chronological story? Or do you need help from a project volunteer?

Done... I archived much of the information and provided links.

No one in the Brock or Callahan family had any Native American connection. No one was Cherokee. Ned Callaha’s parents are white.
