Biography

Charles, the son of Charles Carter and Mary Walker on 15 Oct 1732 and was baptized 15 Nov 1732 in Christ Church Parish, Virginia. [1]

Charles mother Mary Walker, was his father's first wife, and was the eldest of x children.

As grandson of the land baronRobert "King" Carter, Charles was closely related to many of the colony's leading families. Among his influential uncles were John Carter, secretary of the colony and a member of the governor's Council, and Landon Carter, a noted planter, writer, and member of the House of Burgesses.

Carter was educated at the Gloucester County grammar school of William Yates, a clergyman who later briefly served as president of the College of William and Mary, and at the college.

Charles Carter married Elizabeth Chiswell, of Hanover County on November 22, 1753. They had five sons and two daughters.

The grandson of Robert "King" Carter, he was sometimes referred to as Charles Carter of Ludlow, his Stafford County plantation, to distinguish him from his relatives of the same name.[2]

Charles Carter served as a member of the House of Burgesses (1756–1771, 1774–1775), the House of Delegates (1776–1779, 1782–1783), the Senate of Virginia (1789), and the Council of State (1789–1791).

He passed away in 1796.

Notes

This Charles Carter, son of Charles Carter and Mary Walker is a cousin ofCharles Hill Carter, son of John Carter and Elizabeth Hill.

John Carter married Mary Walker Carter who was the daughter of Charles Carter and Mary Walker. Hope I got that all straight!

Ann Byrd is being removed as mother of Charles Carter. His mother was actually Mary Walker, his father's first wife.[3]
