Biography

On March 13, 1671/72, Edward Carter, born circa 1627, married Margery Neasum, the widow of William Neasum who died before 1656.

Edward settled in Lancaster County, Virginia Colony, by 1658. Lancaster County taxed him based on his labor force, assessing him for four tithables, 31 Oct 1658,[1] and for six tithables, 15 Nov 1660.[2]

He was again assessed in Lancaster County, 22 Nov 1668, for nine tithables on the county’s "northside,"[3] i.e., the part of the county that was then north of the Rappahannock River.[4]

In 1674, in Lancaster County, Edward married Audrey Haile, the widow of John Merryman.[5]

The following information pertains to the Will of a different Edward Carter, who died in 1682 (in England):

  • " ... the will of Edward Carter of Edmonton, Middlesex, esquire, dated and probated in 1682 (New England Hist, and Geneal. Beg., \o\. XLVIL), disposing of much property in Virginia, and speaking of having resided on Nansemond River, showing that he must have been the Col. Edward Carter who was in Virginia about 1660, and who may naturally be supposed to have been brother of John Carter. The will gives to a son Edward " my third part (the whole in three parts to be divided) of and in all those messuages, tenements, lands, and hereditaments in Chalfont St. Peter's, Bucks." 4. Lancaster County today lies entirely north of the Rappahannock River. Until 1669, in which year Middlesex County was formed, Lancaster County straddled the river, thus leading the assessors to differentiate between the county's north and south sides. Sources:
