1534 --- Cartier was commissioned by King François I of France[1] to explore the northern American lands in search of riches and the rumored Northwest Passage to Asia.[2]
1541-1543 --- Jacques Cartier and Jean-François de La Roque de Roberval explore Canada and leave men to settle at the St. Lawrence River. The settlement fails.
Theme Notes:
He explored the northeast part of the continent intending to find the elusive passage to the Orient. The large sea described to him by the Indians—"there was never man heard of that found out the end thereof" was probably Lake Ontario.
Sailing west of Newfoundland he "discovered" the St. Lawrence River and explored the region in three voyages between 1535 and 1541.
He met several Iroquoian tribal groups, establishing relationships.
