Categories: Australian Imperial Force, World War I | Gallipoli Campaign
The 11th Battalion was raised at Blackboy Hill Camp near Perth and became the Western Australia contribution to the 3rd Brigade in the 1st Division. The 3rd Brigade comprised battalions from the smaller States. It was also destined to be the Covering Force (i.e., first ashore) at Gallipoli, and the 11th Battalion was to be the left forward battalion. The 11th Battalion landed astride of the Ari Burnu Promontory and struck inland to Plugges Plateau through the tangle of scrub and steep gullies. Their original objective was to be along Third (aka Gun) Ridge north of Scrubby Knoll. Like the rest of the landing force they were to be thwarted by the terrain and the Ottoman response and were held to the Second Ridge line along which the ANZAC position was consolidated. The 11th had several commanding officers during the war: James Lyon Johnston, Raymond Lionel Leane, Stephen Harricks Roberts, Ernest Hilmer Smith, John Newman, and Rupert Anstice Rafferty.
Members of the battalion were awarded: one Victoria Cross (VC); one Companion of the Order of the Bath (CB); two Companions of the order of St Michael and St George (CMG); seven Companions of the Distinguished Service Order (DSO); one Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE); 30 Military Crosses (MC), one bar; 25 Distinguished Conduct Medals (DCM), one bar; 96 Military Medals (MM), two bars; three Meritorious Service Medals (MSM); 85 Mentions in Despatches; seven foreign awards.
