Tennessee
9th Regiment, Tennessee Cavalry (Ward's) [also called 13th or 15th Cavalry] was organized as an eight-company battalion in September, 1862, then two other companies were assigned in November. The men were from Sumner, Trousdale, Smith, and Wilson counties. It skirmished in Tennessee and Kentucky and served in General Morgan's Brigade. On Morgan's raid into Ohio during July, 1863, most of the men were captured at Buffington Island and New Lisbon. Those that remained went on to serve in the 1st Kentucky Cavalry Battalion. Officers: Colonels James D Bennett and William W Ward, Lieutenant Colonel R A Alston, and Major Richard McCann.

  • Company A - Captain Micajah Griffin - Men from Sumner County
  • Company B - Captain Wm P. Simmons, Thomas E.S. Russwurm -Sumner and Trousdale County
  • Company C - Captain John D. Kilpatrick 
  • Company E - Captain Alex W. Rowe - Sumner County or Trousdale County
  • Company F - Captain A.E. Bell, W.J. Dyer - Sumner County
  • Company G - Captain Charles E. Cossett - Sumner County and Smith County
  • Company H - Captain John W. Wiseman - Sumner County, Trousdale County and Wilson County

These had formerly served in Douglass' Battalion, Partisan Rangers:

  • Company I - Captain Felix H. Blackman - Men from Davidson County
  • Company K - Captain J. Richard McCann, Duke Cox -  Davidson County and Rutherford
