Category: United States Army, Northwest Indian War

This category groups profiles of United States Army personnel in the Northwest Indian War (1785-1795)

With the Revolutionary War having ended just the year prior, the Continental Army was downsized to 80 officers and men on June 2, 1784; with the U.S. Army being officially established the next day. As the concept of a standing army was generally distrusted by several key officials at the time, this new organization had to initially rely on pulling men from various state militias to fulfill its ranks.

After several defeats in Ohio, the most notable of which being St. Clair’s Defeat, the regular army was reorganized as the Legion of the United States under the leadership of the recently reinstated General Anthony Wayne in 1792. This legion was comprised of four sub-legions, each with their own distinct unit colors, regimental standards, and uniforms to reflect this change.
