The Volunteer Defence Corps (VDC) in Victoria comprised sequentially numbered battalions 1 to 24. The battalions' dispositions were, sequentially: Footscray, Westgarth, Surry Hills, Prahran, Brighton, Geelong, Camperdown, Portland-Haywood, Hamilton, Mentone-Dandenong, Yarragong, Traralgon, Sale, Horsham, Bendigo, Shepparton, Corowa, North Carlton, Colac, Ballarat, Kerang, Benalla, Korumburra-Loch-Maribyrnong and Ordnance Factory Maribyrnong. Brigadier (later Lieutenant General) John Whitham commanded the Volunteer Defence Corps in Victoria until 1944. Brigadier Campbell Stewart commanded Melbourne Metropolitan Group, Volunteer Defence Corps, in 1942-45.
