Biography

Birth and Parents

Her birth year is estimated as 1689, which would make her aged 24 in 1713 when she was named as a married woman in a deed of gift.

She was the daughter of John Cave who named her in a deed of gift dated 1713. The deeds of gift written at about the same time suggest someone settling their affairs in anticipation of death.

1706 Marriage

She was married in 1706 in Charles County, Maryland. {citation needed}

Elizabeth married, by 5 Oct 1713, Francis Oden.[1]

This is not the date of the marriage, but the date of a deed of gift in which she is addressed by her married name.

1713 Deed of Gift

Deed of Gift dated 5 Oct 1713 from John Cave to his dau. Elizabeth and her husband Francis Oden; cattle; /s/ John Cave (mark); wit. Joseph Johnson (mark), John Adams, Wm. Barker (mark); ack. by Elizabeth Cave, wife of John. Recorded at request of Francis and Elizabeth Oden on 11 Oct 1713.[2]

1730 Brother's Estate

She is named in an inventory of her brother's (Thomas Cave) estate, decd 15 Apr 1730, as "Elizabeth Oden sister to ye deceased - no other kin-" [3]

Death

She signed her will on April 24, 1749 and died not long before April 30 1749 when her will was probated [4].

Children

According to her will, Elizabeth had the following children[4]

  • David
  • Pembroke
  • Lewis
  • Thomas
  • Elizabeth (m. ____ Smith)

The will was witnessed by Thomas Farrand, Harmon.

NOTE: While Elizabeth's name is given as 'OWEN' in will, the children listed are consistent with Odens whose descendants (also named Oden) have been DNA tested to confirm their descent from Elizabeth.

Elizabeth may also have had a son named Francis Jr. [Source?]

Research Notes

Was her name Cave or Cain?

Numerous record transcriptions recorded her father as John Cane or Caine, but a review of the originals indicate her maiden name was Cave.

Derived Sources

  • Robert Barnes' compendium on marriages lists Elizabeth as the daughter of "John Caine". [1]

Originals

  • The account of her brother's estate (in which she is named as his sister, "Eliz Owen") the handwriting is hard to make out), her brother's name is very clearly spelled Thomas Cave. [5].

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Elizabeth by comparing test results with other carriers of her mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known mtDNA test-takers in her direct maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Elizabeth:

I just created a profile for her brother Thomas, just in case that leads to any additional information on this family and the father of Elizabeth and Thomas. Currently their father is shown as a John Cain, identified with the name Cain in Skordas. It is possible that these children have been mis-assigned to that father, in which case I will create a new profile for John Cave, father of Elizabeth and Thomas. But it's extremely important to do the research and documentation first and LNAB revision or file creation last, reflecting the research done!

Jack, your choice in how you want to proceed. Definitely we have a John Cave that gave deeds of gift/mentions his son Thomas and daughter Elizabeth married to Francis Oden. The transcripts that say he was Cane (or Caine) are referencing the deeds that we know were for Cave.

Since this isn't one of my family lines, I'm removing myself as PM.

Thanks Jack! Creating a profile for Thomas was definitely a great call. I admit I'm only just beginning to familiarize myself with this family as most of my efforts thus far have been directed towards confirming my descendancy from Elizabeth and Francis. Now that that's done (or at least, now that I'm 70-80% confident of that), I'm hoping to do some work on these profiles myself.

I definitely agree with your process of research first, LNAB revision last. What's most important to me right now is to go back trough these Oden+Cave Profiles and make sure we have proper citations for deeds, probate records, etc, such that we know exactly where that original document is located. Ideally, I would replace all citations referencing the "Early Colonial Settlers of Southern Maryland and Virginia's Northern Neck Counties" website with specific locations, and descriptions of the documents that website references. We can still keep that as a source, but where we reference a deed or other primary source, we should use a citation specific to that source.

Unless you think you have enough evidence to suggest that John Cain and John Cave were different people, I would hold off on making a new profile for him for now until we look more at the primary sources we have.

Certainly agree that wherever we can reference and link to the original documents that is stronger sourcing than Mike Marshall's site. Marshall's site (Early Colonials), however, does have the advantage of a quick transcript from the original where there is no controversy related to the appearance of letters, so I think it's important to retain the specific link to specific documents in addition to the originals, which can require a painstaking effort to read.

I've created new headings on John Cain/Cave's profile where we can begin allocating facts/references to Cain or Cave depending on new research and original sources. That's an easy way of collecting the information and it will lead us to the proper conclusion.

Agree. Definitely don't think we should throw away Mike Marshall's site, just also highly prioritize sourcing the original document where it's referenced.

And excellent. I'm not sure how much time I'll have to work on in in the next week or so, but certainly I'll add whatever I find to that profile.

Have you tried to see the original immigration/transportation records on which Skordas' book is based? I had assigned this particular John Cain -- now apparently Cave -- to the John Cain who was transported in 1662. Now it's important to sort out whether that is the same person or a different person.
