Ninian Chamberlain is a DAR Patriot Ancestor, A026676.

Ninian Chamberlain (1718/19-1798), a Revolutionary War soldier from Ireland, lived in North Carolina, then Tennessee. Ninian served with Patriotic Service during the American Revolution. He took the Oath of Allegiance to make land entry in Washington County, North Carolina, in 1780.[1]

Ninian and Janet came to America sometime after 1742 - in 1756 according to one source. For his service in the American Revolution, Ninian received a land grant of 310 acres in Green County. Tennessee, on waters of Long Creek. [Deed Bk. A, p. 219, Jefferson Co., TN].

His short will was written 4 May 1798 [copy reprinted in Chamberlain Chain, Vol. 9, p. 4]; probated 29 Jun 1809, left to son Jeremiah his gun, saddle and bridle, Bible and Psalm Book and his best suit of clothes. Heirs of his son John's body $10.00, and rest of his real and personal property to be equally divided between his four daughters, Mary, Margaret, Elizabeth and Janet.[2]


Jefferson County, Tennessee History page lists Ninian Chamberlain, along with 29 other names, as one of the first settlers in the county. Land Grants found in "North Carolina Land Grants in Tennessee 1778-1791" page 67, list Grant #1633: Ninian Chamberlain, 500 acres, in 1786, "on the North side of Holstein river". [3]

Many sources state Ninian was a Sergeant in the Continental Line during the Revolution. However, this service took place in Pennsylvania and does not belong to this Ninian. This Ninian took an oath.

"Burnet County History: A Texas Pioneer History, 1847-1979 (2-Vol. Set)" Vol.II, by Darrell Debo: Ninian Chamberlain with his family came to America from Ireland in 1756. He served as a sergeant in the Continental Line. He lived in North Carolina, and in 1795 received a land grant. He married his wife Janet ?? in 1739 in Ireland.
