Henry CLACK was born in Goosey, Berkshire, England, and baptised on 8 October 1838 (probably in the chapel at Goosey). [1][2][3]
Henry appears in the 1841 census for Stanford in the Vale, Wantage, with his father George Clack and his mother Maria, in a house in close proximity to various other houses occupied by his grandfather and his father's brothers' families. All the Clack adult males are listed as labourers.[1]
Henry left England for South Africa, arriving sometime before 1861, where he married Sophia Whitehorn on February 26, 1861, in Salem, near Grahamstown. The couple were resident at Sweet Kloof at the time of the marriage.[4]
Henry moved to the Kimberley area (most likely around the time of the discovery of diamonds)[5], where his fourth child was baptised.[6]
They had four children in 12 years.
He is reflected as living in Vrededorp, Johannesburg with Sophia on the death notice of his son George William in 1909.[7]
No record has been found of Henry's death, but it must have been between 1909 and 1915 as Sophia was recorded as a widow on her death notice. Given that Sophia died in Vrededorp, Johannesburg, aged 74 on 26 June 1915.], it is likely that Henry died there too.[8]
