Elizabeth was born in Dudley, Staffordshire, England, in January of 1895, to the parents Rebecca Peck and John Clayton . Dudley , for those who don’t know, is in the centre of the “Iron Age” , or what started it. What it was, and still is called, “The Black Country”, an area of the West Midlands, that was mostly known for it’s coal and copper mines, and anything to do with manufacturing with steel and iron. There were a lot of pottery/ china manufacturing, including Royal Daulton in the area also. Due to all of this, the air pollution, people’s clothes from work, and buildings etc. were coated with a black dust. Hence the name “The Black Country”. The people there are known to be some of the country's hardest working people of all, extreemly hard working, and family oriented.
Elizabeth Clayton was (Lizzie was Baptised in February 1895, in Tipton, Staffordshire, England.
Elizabeth Clayton married Jeffrey Sherwood in1914 in the town of Dudley, Staffordshire, England. Together, they raised a fantastic family with strong family, Christian, moral, traditional, values. Yet, there has always been good humour, joy, singing and dancing throughout the many years, all of whom have been very close for many generations. They always kept intouch when someone moved away, even if it was to the other side of the world. Their children consisted of: 6 Girls and 1 boy. Bertha, Alice, Olive, Kathy, Lily, Godfrey and Ann. She had a very loving husband, Jeff Sherwood , who worked as an Iron Moulder of Gas Stoves. He was kind hearted, jolly and always devoted to his family. She was passionate about her family, hard working, was alwas up for a good giggle and loved to sew. Unfortunately, an accident happened while sewing with her machine one day. She lost one of her eyes when, the machine needle came down, hit a pin, that was holding the fabric in place. It shot up and hit her in the eye. She had to wear a glass eye. Her Son Godfrey, would get in trouble as a small boy for taking her spare glass eyes and playing “Marlies” with them. (a game children often played with marbles). She was a soft spoken and gentle woman, whom attended church regulary. Eventually, Elizabeth was taken by stomach cancer. Sadly, as time catches up with all of us, she passed away in March of 1968. How I wish I had the honour of meeting and getting to know such a fine lady.
