Biography

This profile is part of the Chebacco Parish, Massachusetts One Place Study.

Margaret Cogswell was baptized at the Chebacco Parish Church on 23 Oct 1726, in Ipswich, Essex County, Province of Massachusetts Bay. She was the daughter of Gifford Cogswell and Sarah Parsons.[1]

Margaret married William Goldsmith of Wenham, the son of Zacheus Goldsmith, Jr., and Tabitha Dodge, on 11 Apr 1745, at the Chebacco Parish Church, in Ipswich.[2]

Margaret and William resided in Ipswich and were part of the Chebacco Parish community. They had five children baptized at the Chebacco Parish Church:

  1. Gifford Goldsmith (bp. 27 Apr 1746, Chebacco Parish Church)[3]
  2. William Goldsmith (bp. 31 Jul 1748, Chebacco Parish Church;[4] d. before 9 Feb 1751/2)
  3. Tabitha Goldsmith (bp. 30 Jul 1749, Chebacco Parish Church)[5]
  4. William Goldsmith (bp. 9 Feb 1751/2, Chebacco Parish Church)[6]
  5. Margaret Goldsmith (bp. 24 Feb 1754, Chebacco Parish Church)[7]

Margaret Cogswell Goldsmith may have died in 1754, since, on 23 Oct 1754, William Goldsmith signed Guardianship Bond for his daughter, Tabitha,[8] his son, Jefford,[9] his son, William,[10] and his daughter, Margaret, [11] each described as "a Minor under 14 years of age." His sureties for all four bonds were John [? Fitts], Jr., a Tanner of Ipswich, and Zaccheus Goldsmith, a gentleman of Wenham. This may also be the reason William Goldsmith submitted an accounting of Margaret's father's estate, for which he had been executor, on 25 Oct 1754.[12]

Research Notes

Disambiguation - Identity of Second Wife of Francis Burnham, Margaret Cogswell: The second wife of Francis Burnham, Margaret Cogswell, has been mistakenly identified with the Margaret Cogswell who was daughter of Gifford Cogswell and Sarah Parsons, who married William Goldsmith in 1745. Margaret (Cogswell) Goldsmith, however, must have died in about 1754, since, in October of 1754, her husband, William Goldsmith, arranged to assume guardianship of their children, as explained above in the discussion of her date of death. Then, two days later, he submitted a final accounting (such as would be triggered by her death) of her father's estate, for which he was executor (also discussed above). It should be noted that this probate evidence from Gifford Cogswell's estate also cements the identity of William Goldsmith's wife as Gifford's daughter, Margaret. If a second argument might be required that Francis Burnham's second wife was not Margaret (Cogswell) Goldsmith, then the records of Francis's Intention and marriage to his Margaret Cogswell, which names her as such,[13] should suffice: If, despite the evidence that William Goldsmith survived his wife, Francis had married that Margaret, she would have been identified as Margaret Goldsmith, not Margaret Cogswell. If there had been a divorce from William Goldsmith, rather than her death, she might be known again as Margaret Cogswell, but there is no evidence for a divorce and a divorce would not have triggered action on her father's estate. Bearing these arguments in mind, Francis has been detached from that Margaret Cogswell, daughter of Gifford Cogswell and Sarah Parsons, and his son has also been detached from her as his mother. I'm thinking that there must have been 2 different individuals. Ancestry had her marrying first William Goldsmith and then Burnham. There was a hint for a will but I tried to read it and it didn't mention any of the children of Margaret and William Goldsmith. I'm thinking this is accurate for Margaret Cogswell Goldsmith. Her daughter, Tabitha does marry a Burnham. That would be my line. I believe Margaret Cogswell Goldsmith would be my 6th great grandmother.

I find this profile very confusing. I am unsure if she was actually married to William Goldsmith. Both her and William's profiles are a mess on Family Search. Many of the dates are off by 20 plus years. I am leaning toward that she was only married to Francis Burnham. Also that several profiles of William Goldsmith have been merged incorrectly.
