Research Notes

Death Date:

The death date of July 20, 1759, previously attributed to Mary (Cole) Luther in her profile is incorrect due to a misidentification. That date actually belongs to a different Mary Cole, who had parents named John and Susannah (Gray) Cole. She was buried at Plympton, and her gravestone indicates her death on July 20, 1759. The confusion stems from two women named Mary Cole in different locations and the identical names of their parents, leading to the incorrect assignment of the death date to one of them. For example, some family trees refer to specific sources for her death, such as Mayflower Births and Deaths, vol. 1, page 317, citing a transcription of Mary (Cole) Wright's gravestone from Mayflower Descendant, vol. 11, page 191. Hence, it is likely that Mary (Cole) Luther passed away on a different date.

Moreover, numerous family trees incorrectly state that her husband passed away on April 8, 1748. The Swansea town book records the death of a Caleb Luther, specifically Caleb Luther Jr., on this date. The record details the death of Caleb Luther Jr., son of Caleb Luther and Mary, who passed away by drowning in a small brook on April 8, 1748, at the age of 25.[3] Again, the similarity in names has resulted in the incorrect belief in family trees that Mary's husband and son died on the same date, leading to confusion.

Now that the incorrect death dates for Mary and Caleb have been corrected, when did they actually die? Here is the context as to when they died: They lived in Swansea into the 1750s. After part of Swansea was split off and given to Rhode Island to create the new town of Warren in 1747, Caleb and Mary Luther were involved in buying and selling land there until the 1760s. For further details on their activities, you can explore the summary of land and property records below.

Furthermore, Caleb Luther appears just above Frederick Luther at Warren in the 1774 census of Rhode Island. Given their proximity as neighbors, it is reasonable to assume a familial relationship between Caleb and Frederick Luther, possibly father and son. Since their son named Caleb passed away in 1748, it suggests that Caleb, the father, might have still been alive in 1774. Caleb's absence in the 1777 Military Census, which included men over 60, suggests that he may have passed away between the 1774 and 1777 censuses. Once more, Caleb Luther is absent from the 1782 Rhode Island census, while a household led by Mary Luther, aged over 55, is recorded. She was alive in 1782, so she must have died sometime after 1782.

It is highly likely that the death reported in the newspaper clip linked to this profile is that of Mary. The Providence Gazette reported the death of Mrs. Mary Luther on December 23, 1786, at Warren, in the 99th year of her age. Although several other newspapers published this notice in the following weeks, none specified the exact date of her death.

1 March 1762 — Caleb Luther of of Swansey and Mary his wife sold their 48 acre homestead farm at Swansey with two dwelling houses, one occupied by them and one by their son Jabez Luther.[5]
21 February 1763 — Caleb Luther of Swanzey purchased 42 acres at Warren.[6]
28 April 1763 — Caleb Luther of Warren, yeoman, "in Consideration of Love good will and naturall affection I have and Do bear Towards my Dutiful Son Frederick Luther" of Warren, labourer, gifted Frederick about 12 acres lying partly in Swansey and partly in Warren.[7]

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Mary by comparing test results with other carriers of her mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known mtDNA test-takers in her direct maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Mary:

The death record at the very bottom of the right page here:

https://archive.org/details/vitalrecordsofrh07arno/page/66/mode/2up

is clearly for this Mary. So I will change the bio and death date to correspond.

This is not the original record though - this is a transcription. If she was 99 at death the dates still don't match up, previous documentation doesn't indicate she was 99 at death. No indication that she was the spouse of Caleb Luther in this record - might be another Mary. I would recommend making a notation about this but not changing the date listed above.

It is from a newspaper announcement of the death. I have pulled up an image of the Providence Gazette from 23 December 1786 and am looking at it right now, page 3. The death announcement is there. I can make a clip of the image and add it to the profile as well. It was announced in several other newspapers as well in the following weeks, and they are viewable at the America's Historical Newspapers database.

I still don't see where there is proof that THIS Mary Luther was the wife of Caleb Luther. The GSMD (Mayflower) records do not show this date. Not saying it isn't possible but more documentation is needed to prove this Mary and the above Mary are the same person.

That is for this Mary Cole, daughter of a different John and Susannah:

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Cole-8730

The GSMD source just refers to the Mayflower Descendant, vol.11, page 191, which is giving cemetery transcriptions. The 20 July 1759 date is on the gravestone of Mary Wright. She was born Mary Cole. That gravestone also isn't at Warren -- it's at Plympton.

There just weren't many Mary Luthers floating around born around 1688, as suggested by the death record, since that was 17th century, so after noting that there is now no competing death record, that is a good case that it is hers. But to give real proof, we must get into a bigger issue that I wasn't going to bring up until later. But I'll bring it up now. Her husband did not die in 1748 either. Proof is, for instance, in the document on the right side of this page

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3Q9M-CSKM-YSH8-F?i=166&cat=105143

in which Caleb Luther and his wife Mary of Swanzey formally announced their receipt of their legacy from their honored father John Cole. They both signed it in 1754.

Caleb and Mary were transacting land at Warren until the late 1760s, including a sale joint with Frederick and Joanna (their son).

Interesting sounds like some new leads then.

Both my mom, brother and I joined GSMD in past couple of years and the proofs for this generation on approved applications read "Caleb DR VR Swansea, MA 1:171; Mary BR VR Swansea Bk A : 14; MR VR Swansea Bk B:171; John Cole will 22 Sep1742 Warren, RI named daughter Mary Luther WB 1:35 Caleb named in Will of father Samuel II, [FindAGrave]: Kickemuit Cem., RI"

I think edit are fine as suggested are fine if sourced. New applicants for GSMD might need to submit additional information to prove lineage with updated info. Thanks for your dedication and help Barry!

Yes, I plan to take some time and add a bunch of records and some research notes. I just wanted to communicate some first.

I just got approved for GSMD last month. So we both know it's pretty hard work to get in now, harder than it used to be. I don't know if GSMD filters out info from older applications that may be more suspect. The reference to Swansea VR 1:171 is their marriage record. On page 214 is the death record for Caleb Luther on 8 April 1848, but it clearly says he was Caleb Jr., who drowned, aged 25.

A Caleb Luther appears right next to Frederick Luther in the 1774 Census of Rhode Island at Warren, with two other adult females. Their son Caleb did drown in 1748, which is probably where the common 1748 death date for the father came from. So it is hard to see what other Caleb would be living right next to Frederick other than his father. In the 1782 census, a Mary Luther appears as head-of-household, but no Caleb appears, so it seems he died between 1774 and 1782. He also doesn't appear in the 1777 Military census, so he may have died between 1774 and 1777.
