Biography

Margaret (Colgan) Cullen was born in Ireland.

Margaret Colgan was born about 1842 in Kilcock, Co. Kildare, Ireland. Her parents were Thomas Colgan (a farmer) and Anne Owens.

In early adulthood she seems to have moved to Dublin, where she had several children with John Cullen, but they did not marry until 1875 in St James' church, Dublin city.^[1]

John worked for Guinness Brewery, but died young in 1878, leaving Margaret with three children. She obtained work and a widows pension from Guinness, but their records stated that she was a "poor and hard working widow".

Her three children were Michael, Ellen and Elizabeth.

In 1911 Margaret is living with her daughter Elizabeth and her family at Reuben Street, Usher's Quay. ^[2]

Margaret died in the hospice at Harold's Cross on 6th December 1915 at the given age of 73. The cause of her death was cardiac degeneration suffered for one month. Her last residence was given as 33 Synge Street, Dublin. ^[3]

Birth/baptism record:
Margaret was born before the civil birth records started. No baptism record has been found for her. There are missing years in the register at Kilcock parish which may account for the absence of a record. Her year of birth is estimated from the age given on her death record.
