Samuel spent some time in Michigan, where one of his brothers had settled. There, he married Miranda Kitteredge (1824-1899), the daughter of Dr. William Thomas Kitteredge and Nancy Gorton, marrying in Ypsilanti, Michigan on April 10, 1853.[2] John Coller is thought to have fought during the American Civil War, possibly achieving the rank of Captain.
After the war, John and his family migrated further west to Missouri, settling in Blue Mound Township, where he farmed. In 1870, his household included his widowed father-in-law, William Kitteredge, a physician, his brother-in-law, John H. Kitteredte, age 25, and his nephew, William Coller, age 25.[3] John and Miranda adopted two daughters, Clara B. and Cora F. Harding, both born in Ohio,[citation needed] both of whom lived in their household in 1880.[4][5]
His wife passed away in 1899; in 1900, John lived alone in Blue Mount Township, working at the age of 71 as a general insurance agent.[6] John Coller passed away in Blue Mound, Missouri at the age of 82[citation needed] and is buried at Collar Cemetery in Dawn, Missouri.[7]
