George Countryman was born about 1745 probably in the Holy Roman Empire. (See Research Notes)
Family History says that he was brought to America in about 1750. He was an early settler in Bedford Co, Pennsylvania and became a noted scout and Indian fighter. He was killed by the Indians in 1779. He was of large and powerful stature. George married Rachel Millhouse in 1765.[1] They had at least four children:
By 1774, he and his family were living in Brothers Valley, Pennsylvania.[4]
He served in the Revolutionary War, enlisting at least twice. He was a court martial man (just below the rank of ensign) in the Brothers Valley Company under Captain Rhoads. The first record available is for 10 Dec 1777[5] and again on 18 May 1778.[6]
George was killed in defense of his country on 13 Jun 1779. He was buried in the Peter Hay Farm Cemetery.[7][8][9]
His wife was heavily pregnant with Johann Peter who was born two months later on 16 Aug 1779. He never saw his father.
Research Notes
Roots
He may have been of Huguenot descent.
His marriage record lists him as Gunterman, which is German for Countryman. Germany did not exist as a country until 1806, so if he was of Germanic descent he was most likely born in the Holy Roman Empire.
The German connection is supported by the names of his children, Germanic names, by the German church in which they were christened, and the area where he moved in Pennsylvania.
