Biography

William Cranfield was born in Holloway, Islington, London, in 1869^[1]. He was the son of John William Cranfield, an instrument maker/brass worker, and Mary Cranfield, née Lee.

William became a footman^[4], then a butler^[6], and later a gas fitter^[9]. In 1899 he married Mary Knowles in Honiton, Devon^[5] (possibly Mary's birthplace)^[6]. She had previously been a housemaid in Pylewell Park, Lymington, where William was a footman. The couple had at least three children: Hilda Mary, William Cecil, and Helena.

Mary died in 1907^[7]. The following year, William married Mary Standing, in Lambeth^[8]. They moved to Rochester and had a daughter Doris^[9].

William probably died in Rochester in 1939^[10].
