Henry was born in 1895 to Edmond Darby and Emelie Couvillon. The 1940 Census has him living in Lydia with his wife Velma and five children. Henry held draft registration cards for both WWI [1] and WWII. [2] He passed away in 1978.
"Seeking a better home, the Darby family moved from Sunset [Louisiana] to New Iberia [Louisiana] when Henry was 15 years old. He had not yet entered formal school, as he was needed to aid on his father's small farm. After settling in their new home, however, he did begin school in New Iberia and progressed to the fourth grade. After beginning what might have been an education to eventually lead to a degree, he was forced to drop out of school to again to aid on the family's small truckfarm. He worked with his father for several years before the war clouds burst and the rain of war [WW I] plummeted down upon the United States. After war was formally declared, the call for able-bodied men to serve in the uniform of their country was issued. Henry was the first from the Teche Country [3] to leave his home to serve in the military. At age 22, on September 18, 1917, he was inducted into the U.S. Army." [4]
