William Dodson's date of birth and place of birth are currently unknown as his birth is not recorded in the North Farnham Parish Register, in Richmond county, Virginia. William was the son of Charles Dodson and Anne [1]
The only known record of William is the bequest of land his father, Charles Dodson Sr., left him in his Will in 1702/03. Charles Dodson Sr.'s bequest in his will to William reads as follows: "Fourthly. I give and bequeath to my son William Dodson the Plantation in hickory neck with one hundred and fifty acres of land to him and the male heires Lawfully begotten of his body and if no male heire appeare then to Returns to the next heirs of the Dodson the said Land to bind upon brother Bartho Richd Dodsons Land from the head to the foot - "[2]
There is a record of James Tune (Toone) and Bartholomew Richard Dodson selling this land on the 6th November 1717 to John Lawson for 5500 lbs. of tobacco, though that deed called for 200 acres, the deed recorded in Richmond County, Virginia Deed Book 7, page 241.[3]
William may have died as a young man or moved away abandoning his property to his brothers. No marriage or descendants have been located for William.[4]
William has been previously listed as having married Elizabeth Dale and having fathered the children listed below; however, there are no sources or documents to prove that William was married or had children. William has previously been listed with a date of death of 1753 in Richmond county, Virginia. The source cited for this date and place of death is given as William Dodson leaving a will in Richmond county, Virginia in August 1753. The William Dodson who left his will in Richmond county, Virginia in August 1753 was the son of Charles Dodson Jr. Charles Dodson Jr.'s son William Dodson had married the widow Hannah Goad Phillips. William did not have any children and in his will left his estate to his brother James Dodson, nephew Samuel Dodson, Niece's Ann and Alice Dodson and wife Hannah Dodson to have the use of his estate during her widowhood and after her death the estate was to be equally divided between Samuel Dodson, Ann Dodson, and Alice Dodson.[5]
