Biography

John Dougan was born on 10 Aug 1829 in Leswalt, Wigtownshire, Scotland.[1] This is consistent with subsequent census records that indicate he was born about 1830 in Leswalt.[2][3][4][5][6][7] (about 1831[8])

His parents were William Dougan and Janet McWilliams, according to his birth certificate.[1] His parents were John Dougan and Jessie McWilliams, according to his death certificate.[7]

In the 1841 Scotland census, John Dougan (born about 1831 in Scotland) was living with his parents William and Janet Dougan, and siblings (Henry, Elizabeth, Alexander, Janet, Archibald and Andrew) at Sochton Mill in Colmonell, Ayrshire, Scotland. His father was a miller.[8]

John Dougan married Jessie Tait on 30 April 1850 in Kelton, Scotland.[9][10]

Census records indicate that he married Jenet or Jessie, born about 1831 or 1833 in Old Luce, Wigtownshire. It appears that her name was transcribed differently in different records, but she is the same person as other details are similar.[3][4]

Their daughter Elizabeth Dougan was born 8 Dec 1850 to John Dougan and Jessie Tait and baptized in Old Luce, Wigtownshire, Scotland.

In the 1851 Scotland census, John Dougan (21) and Janet Dougan (20) are living in Leswalt, Wigtonshire, with his parents William and Janet Dougan, and their daughter Elisabeth Dougan (4 months).[2]

In the 1861 Scotland census, John and Jenet (Jessie?) were married and living in Old Luce. John was working as a miller. They had four children born in Old Luce: Elizabeth (born about 1851), Jane (about 1853), James (about 1856) and William (about 1859).[3]

In the 1871 Scotland census, John and Jessie were living in Crossmichael, Kirkcudbrightshire. John was working as a miller. Their children were Elisabeth (born about 1852 in Kirckpatrick-Durham), William (1859, Old Luce), John (1862, Old Luce), Jessie (1865, Old Luce), Ellen (1866, Kirkbright), Alexander (1869, Kirkbright), Maggie (1869, Kirkbright) and Archibald (1870, Crossmichael).[4]

In the 1881 Scotland census, John and Jessie were still living in Crossmichael. John was still working as a (grain) miller. Living with them were their children Ellen (born about 1866), Alexander (1869) and Archibald (1871), and grand-children Mary Dougan (1876) and Jessie McMinn (1877).[5]

In the 1891 Scotland census, John and Jessie were living in Kelton, Kirkcudbrightshire. John was still working as a miller. Living with them were their children Elizabeth (born about 1853), Alexander (1869) and Archibald (1871), and grand-children William (1884), Henry (1888) and John (1890).[6]

John Dougan died on 27 July 1892 in Kelton, Kirkcudbrightshire, Scotland. His death certificate indicates he was 62 years old, a miller and his wife was Jess Tait, and that his parents were John [sic] Dougan, miller, and Jessie Williams, both deceased.[7]
