Sources

  • google books Publication of the article "La famille du Cloux" in "Bulletin de la commission de l' histoire des Eglises Wallones, Tome V" (starting at page 225). Relevant for this profile is this baptism record from 1577 at page 251: "Dimanche 17e jour dud. mois (novembre 1577) Monsieur du Moulin a baptize Marie, fille de Nicaise du Cloux, chastelain du Chateau Regnaut, et de Marie Aubertin sa femme, dont maistre Jean du Cloux, baillit de ceste ville et dame Francoise Roland sa femme ont este P. et M.". Note that this article was published in 1892, so well before the original baptism records of Sedan were lost during WWII.

A third (indirect) source can also be found as scans on familysearch. This is the collection of card indexes (Fichier Wallon) of the Franch (Wallonne) church in The Netherlands (which also includes French locations such as Sedan). This index was also created before 1940. The du Cloux cards can be found starting this link:

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3QS7-89S5-NDCR?i=4&cc=2134301&cat=129140 On scan nr. 9 the same baptism entry from 1577 as mentioned in my previous comment can be found, but this time clearly this is just an index and not a word for word transcription.

A second relevant source is a publication by a Dutch genealogist A.H.G.P. van den Es (Antonie Hendrik Gerrit Paul van den Es (1832-1909)) in 1892. He wrote a genealogy named "La famille du Cloux". He had an interest in this family because his mother was Anthonette du Cloux (1785-1872) and his wife was Louison Augusta du Cloux (1834-1902). Of course old 19th century publications like this should be treated with care, and some of his conclusions may be disputable, but this one is remarkable because it contains an appendix holding "Pieces justificatives" and these are actual full transcriptions from church records from Sedan from the period that is now missing, but that still existed in the 19th century. As far as I could check them with the transcriptions/index published on familysearch as mentioned in my previous comment, these are true transcriptions.

This publication is part of "Bulletin de la commission de l' histoire des Eglises Wallones, Tome V" (starting at page 225) and is available online on google-books, see: https://books.google.nl/books?id=m64RAAAAYAAJ&printsec=frontcover&hl=nl&source=gbs_ge_summary_r#v=onepage&q=famille%20du%20cloux&f=false Relevant for this profile is this baptism record from 1577 at page 251 (which is actually not part of the familysearch transcriptions): "Dimanche 17e jour dud. mois (novembre 1577) Monsieur du Moulin a baptize Marie, fille de Nicaise du Cloux, chastelain du Chateau Regnaut, et de Marie Aubertin sa femme, dont maistre Jean du Cloux, baillit de ceste ville et dame Francoise Roland sa femme ont este P. et M." This clearly shows that Jean du Cloux, baillit de Sedan, was still alive on this day. Therefore the death date in this profile is wrong, and should be changed in "after 17-Nov-1577".

Currently no proper sources are cited for this profile.

As I understand it, no church records have survived for the relevant period of Sedan, since they were destroyed in WWII in 1940 (1). For a list of what has survived see https://archives.cd08.fr/arkotheque/consult_fonds/fonds_seriel_resu_rech.php?ref_fonds=4 However, there are transcriptions made before 1940 available online. A major source is this collection of transcriptions available on familysearch: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:S3HT-6M4S-Q6N?owc=9WLY-HZS%3A1067483304%2C1067484102%3Fcc%3D1582585&wc=9WLY-2NP%3A1067483304%2C1067484102%2C1067485604&cc=1582585 In the marriage records 1573-1608 on scan 153 of: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:S3HT-6M4S-Q6N?i=152&wc=9WLY-2NP%3A1067483304%2C1067484102%2C1067485604&cc=1582585 there is a reference of the marriage of Jean du Cloux and Anne de Laval, 3-Nov-1596 in Sedan. This record states for Jean du Cloux that he is "fils de feu Jean, bailli de Sedan." So this is the best we can do I think as source for a date at which the Jean du Cloux in this profile was deceased.

(1) note: a mention of the destruction of the archives of Sedan can be found in a Dutch language newspaper article in "Sibbe : maandblad van het Nederlandsch Verbond voor Sibbekunde", dated 1-Jul-1942. A copy is available online https://resolver.kb.nl/resolve?urn=ddd:010329910:mpeg21:p267

Du Cloux-24 and Du Cloux-4 appear to represent the same person because: Both profiles have the same birth and death dates, same wife, and same son (with slight name variation). These 2 profiles are duplicates - please merge them.

DuCloux-2 and Du Cloux-4 appear to represent the same person because: Oldest ancestor ready to merge. No tree conflicts. Thanks!

DuCloux-2 should be merged into Du_Cloux-4 in order to keep the space after the prefix.

But Du_Cloux-13 is the grandson!

I set him as rejected match to both profiles. Please always do a careful compare between the oldest ancestor duplicates, before any merge proposals.

Suggest that it is time to merge DuCloux-2 and Du_Cloux-13 into Du_Cloux-4 or are you setting up another du_Cloux as target?
