Biography

Martha (Dubs) Runkle has German Roots.
Martha (Dubs) Runkle was a Pennsylvanian.

Martha, daughter of Jacob Dubbs Elisabeth Motter, was born in August 1821, [1][2] probably in Manheim Township, York County, Pennsylvania.

About 1845 she married Daniel Runkle,[1][3] son of Jacob George Runkle and Catharine Swartz. They had no children.

In 1850, Daniel (age 28, carpenter) and Martha Runkle (27) owned a home in Manheim Township next door to her parents and siblings.[4]

After her father's death in 1851,[5] her widowed mother Elizabeth Dubs (62) moved into the Manheim Township home (valued at $3,500) with Daniel (39, farmer) and Mattie Runkle (38).[6] A teenager named Daniel Snyder (13) also sheltered with them and probably helped around the farm in 1860.[6] Daniel's father Jacob (72, farmer) and mother Catharine (73), who was now suffering from insanity, lived two doors away from them.[6]

Her mother did not die until 1878,[7] but she did not stay with the Runkle's in 1870, when only Daniel (age 49, farmer) and Martha (49) lived in the Manheim Township home (now valued at $8,000).[8] The 1880 record notes that Martha (58) cannot write and that Daniel (58) had retired from farming.[9]

Martha died 28 August 1886 at age 65 years, 16 days.[1] She was buried at Dubs Cemetery in Manheim Township.[2]
