Biography

Other than the 1849[1] and 1907[2] genealogical histories of the Foote Family there appear to be few recognized sources for documenting the seemingly notable life of Moses Foote, Jr.

Here is what was written by Abram Foote: "Moses Foote, the son of Moses Foote, was born in ... Waterbury ... Ct. [records suggest that he was actually born 30 miles to the south in Branford and his family moved to Waterbury when he was about 8 years old], where he resided until soon after the close of the Revolutionary War, when he moved with his family to commence a settlement in ... New York. He was accompanied in this movement by the families of his sons and his sons-in-law — making altogether a neighborhood of his own. ... They took up a temporary residence at German Flatts... In the autumn of 1786 they determined on a location sixty miles beyond, at a place now called Clinton, and there erected log huts, preparatory to an early removal in the succeeding spring. Accordingly, with the other families, Mr. Foote commenced the settlement of the new town in March, 1787 ... He died Feb 9, 1819, at the age of 84."[3]

The founding of Clinton, NY by Moses Foote and company is recounted on the website of the Clinton Historical Society [4] In the upper end of the park at Clinton, New York is a granite monument, with this inscription on the south side, "Moses Foote, Esq., with seven other families, commenced the settlement of this town March 3, 1787." On the opposite side are the names: " Moses Foote, Luther Foote, Ira Foote, Ludim Blodget, James Bronson, Bronson Foote, Barnabas Pond, Levi Sherman." Photos of the marker with the names of Moses Foote and company can be viewed on the website of the historical marker database [5]

The first 6 persons named on the monument were related by birth or by marriage. Moses Jr. was the father of Bronson Foote, Ira Foote and Luther Foote and the father-in-law of Barnabas Pond (1755-1841) (married to Thankful Foote). Bronson Foote and Ira Foote were married respectively to Thankful Pond (1757-1843) and Mary Pond (1761-)-- two sisters of Barnabas Pond.

Birth

Moses was born in Branford on 3 October 1734 to Moses Foote and his wife Mary[6]. A Foote family genealogy tells us that she was Mary Byington.[7]

First marriage and children

According to the Foote family genealogical histories, the Moses of this profile married first to Thankful Bronson on Aug. 12, 1756 (she was born 6 Sept 1736 to John Bronson Jr. and died 5 Sept 1757). They had one child:[8][9]

  1. Bronson, b. 5 Sept 1757, m. Thankful Pond on 7 May 1782 in Waterbury[10]

Second marriage

Moses is said to have married second Amy Richards on 17 May 1759 (she was born to Jonah Richards, of E. Hartford and N. Hartford, Ct. and died in Clinton, NY on 13 Aug 1813). They are said to have had 9 children:[11][12]

  1. Ira, m. Mary Pond on 2 April 1782 in Waterbury[13]
  2. Thankful, m. Barnabas Pond on 17 Feb 1784[14]
  3. Luther, m. Sally Pond on 22 Mar 1784 in Waterbury.[15]
  4. Amy, twin to Anna, bp. 15 Mar 1767 at the First Congregational Church of Plymouth (5 to 10 miles north of Waterbury)[16]
  5. Anna, twin to Amy, bp. 15 Mar 1767 at the First Congregational Church of Plymouth (5 to 10 miles north of Waterbury)[17]

  9. Betsey, twin to Jarius, bp. 1 March 1778 at the First Congregational Church of Plymouth[21]

Revolutionary War and migration to New York

The Revolutionary War service of Moses Foote is documented by various sources.[22][23] "Lieutenant of Wadsworth's Brigade, Jne to Dec 1776"

Residence in Oneida, NY

The 1790 census found Moses to be living in "Whites Town" (an archaic name for Clinton and environs).[24]

By 1800, this residence was classified as "Paris", Oneida County, New York[25] and by 1810 it was simply grouped with all residents of Oneida County.[26]

Death

Moses died 9 February 1819 in Clinton, Oneida County, New York.[27]

Hawkins (contributor 48055793). The FindAGrave memorial includes a photo of a memorial stone and a biography written by the Clinton Historical Society. "In March 1787, Moses Foote led six to seven families to settle in what is now Clinton. He was born August 4, 1734 in Waterbury, Connecticut (now part of Plymouth) and died February 9, 1819 in Clinton and is interred in an unmarked grave in the Old Burying Ground. Twice married. Foote first took Thankful Bronson as his bride, but she died after only one year. Then Foote married Amy Richards who came to Clinton with him. Moses had nine children including sons, Ira, Luther, and Bronson who came to Clinton with him. Various histories have described Foote as six feet tall, of powerful frame, having great nervous force, self-reliant, a natural leader, capable of great endurance, and a model pioneer. Having perseverance, ingenuity, a strong Calvinist God-fearing belief, and "Yankee Pluck" were attributed to Foote and the other early settlers. Foote served in the American Revolution as a Lieutenant in the 1st regiment of Col. James Wadsworth and as Captain in the 25th Regiment of Connecticut Volunteers. Starting at age 53 he led the early Clinton community for its first 32 years, dying at age 84. He built a house on the corner of Williams and College streets, today's McHarris Gifts, and later ran a tavern across the street where Hemstrought's is today. --Clinton Historical Society"
