BIography

According to "History of the Gaines Family" by L.P. Gaines, Adairsville, Georgia. Published in 1918 by T.H. Lang, Calhoun, Georgia, page 24, Humphrey "moved to Elbert County, Georgia, after 1789. In a tax list Culpeper Co., VA, 1788, he is listed with one horse, in 1790, with two horses, 1800 Census, Laurens Co., SC, reports: Males: 3 under 10; 1 of 10-16, 1 of 26-45; Females: 1 below 10, 1 of 26-45. He received land in Rabun Co., GA, in 1827 Land Lottery."

In the "Register of Marriages" for Culpeper County, Virginia, Humphrey Gaines and Elizabeth Warren were married on 12 February 1789, by George Eve. Elizabeth Warren Gaines appears to be the mother of all the children, since they were all born after the marriage date and before her death.

Humphrey may have had a first wife named Martha "Patsy" Bowles, born 1756, and died 1826. Their marriage date is 17 Feb 1779. It is unknown if they had any children or when the marriage ended.

Gaines-2445 and Gaines-1215 appear to represent the same person because: clear duplicate

Gaines-1366 and Gaines-1215 appear to represent the same person because: same father, based on death of mother and Find a Grave, his mother would have been Mariah, not the second wife
