Biography

Frederick George Hanslip Lawrence was born on 18 May 1817 in Upwell, Norfolk - about 5 miles south of the town of Wisbech, Cambridgeshire, England. He was a son of the conveyancer (real estate lawyer) John Lawrence and Ann (Hanslip) Lawrence.

Frederick was baptised on 29 Dec 1819 at St. Peter's Parish Church, Upwell together with four of his siblings.[1][2]

He arrived in New York City on 23 Sep 1835 with the occupation "traveller", then made his way to Georgia where on 10 Jul 1837 he married Susan Delphia Peteet. He appears as Frederick Lawrence in the 1840 census in Georgia, two lines away from Susan Peteet's father Chenoweth Peteet.

It is possible that (pending confirmation from research) he may have decided after immigration to use his second Christian name "George" as his future surname, dropping the use of "Lawrence" altogether. Whether this name change was done by legal process (deedpole) is unknown.

George-3706 and Lawrence-9285 appear to represent the same person because: The record George-3706 has incorrectly transcribed the second Christian name "George" as a surname in error. Original baptism record is for "Frederic George Hanslip Lawrence", born 18 May 1817 (possibly 10 May or 16 May; the first figure is badly written) to father John Lawrence and mother Ann; baptised 29 Dec 1819 together with four other siblings, at St. Peter's Parish Church, Upwell, Norfolk (some five miles from Wisbech, Cambridgeshire). The original reference is now cited in the profile.
