  • Jan was baptized on February 20, 1684 in Giessen, Brabant, Netherlands.[1] His parents were Gijsbert Claesen and Teuntje Jans
  • He married Ariaentie van Druenen on July 1, 1708 in Uitwijk, Waardhuizen, Brabant, Netherlands.[2] They had at least 7 children: Anneke (1709), Gijsbertus (1710), Handerik (1713), Hendrik (1715), Teuntje (1718) and Johanna (1719)
  • Jan passed away after 1719[3]

Research Notes

  • In the transcription of some of Jan's birth certificate incorrectly put Jan's patronym as Claesen when the documents only have Jan's name and his father who was Gijsbert Claesen and it should be Gijsbertsz. This is also the case for many of Jan's siblings. This should be corrected.

Van Beest-79 and Claesen-116 appear to represent the same person because: Hi, I think that these two people are the same and Jan's last name at birth was Claesen. Jan van Beest was baptised as Jan Claesen before the family name van Beest was adopted. H was was baptized on February 20, 1684 in Giessen, Brabant, Netherlands. His parents were Gijsbert Claesen and his mother Teuntje Jans.

He married as the name Jan Gijsbertse van Beest to Ariaantje Henderikze van Drunen. [1]

Van Beest-79 and Claesen-116 are not ready to be merged because: I am not yet convinced that Jan Claesen, baptised 1684 in Giessen, is the same person as Jan van Beest, husband of Ariaentie van Druenen. Is there additional evidence that supports this?

So there are a few indicators but they might not be that strong and maybe I cannot make that leap.

The first thing is that I think on the birth citation the transcription could bes wrong and instead of Jan Claese it should be Jan Gijsbertsen or Gijsbertse as that should be the correct patronym pattern given that his father was Gijsbert Claesen. The certificate just says "Jan". However this same mistake is made on other children I believe are the product of this couple. The other indication is that I think they are the same person is that Teuntje Jans and Gisjbert Claesen have at least 5 children born in Giessen in the years 1681, 1681, 1684, 1687 and 1693. The child born in 1857 (Eefje) has Teuntje Jans and Gijsbert Claesens van Beest as the parents. I have assumed that this is still part of the same family. Hi Sonia,

thanks for the clarification. Yes I agree that the baptism record in 1687 for the child Eefje is a strong hint that Gijsbert Claesz is in fact also known as Gijsbert van Beest, and this makes it much more likely that Jan Gijsbertsz, baptised in 1684 is the same as Jan van Beest. So with this extra information the merge con proceed I think.
