Biography

Register manslaughter

  • From an extract of the register of manslaughters dated 1615 in the Benches of Tuil and Deil it is learned that Alart Gijsbertssen in Herwijnen was struck down by one called Jan Eelissen.[6] A thorough search for any records that might shed more light on this case was preformed by Mr.Nouwt without success. During the course of that search certain records were found which shed some light on the dates between which Alert died: On 10 Aug 1613 a note mentions that there is a legal action [pending] between Dirck van Huesden and Alart Ghijsbertsen.[7] "Alart Ghijsbertsen or his heirs, having resisted six times the legal seizure (of his property) by Dirck Roloffssen and Gheerit van Boltholen, have been fined on 9 Aug 1614 six 'double alderman's guilders', or 13 1/2 guilders."[8]
Dat zijn dood gewelddadig was, blijkt uit het volgende/that his death was a violent one we can read here:[9] Extract uit de registers van doodslag/extract from the registers of manslaughter [10]Alart Ghijsbertssen in Herwijnen is gedood door iemand met de naam Jan Eelissen./Alart Ghijs bertssen was killed by a man named Jan Eelisse,
  • Jan Eelissen will certainly have been no stranger to Alert, given the transactions between Alert and the family Elisen:
  • 1.December 1, 1606[11]Gerit Elisen sells to Aellert Ghijsbertsen :7 hont in Herwijnen ,across the Broockgraeff ,a third of incorporated 3 1/2 morning called Claes Lucas Camp, adjacent:
  • upper Jan Ariensen, including:the heirs of Claes Vijgh,on the north side: Willemken Jans de Rou ,and on the south side :the Broeck Graeff .
  • October 9, 1609 [12] Dirck Elisen promises to pay to Alart Ghijsbertsen154 guilders on 24 June 1610.
  • This agreement was not held and destroyed on January 22,1639
  • The Elisens are the former neighbors of Alerts father Gijsbert Goertzen , as evidenced by the following:
  • November 25, 1581 [13]Gijsbert Goertsen sells Gerit Sandersen the right of way(use of the path across the land/ property) , that he (Gijsbert)owns in Herwijnen, inhabited by Gerit Sander sen adjacent above Mechtelt ,the widow of Aert Willemsen, and the heirs of Gerit Jansen and adjecent : below them heirs of Melis Jansen.
  • For sure the yard/land/place in Herwijnen that is inhabited by him, adja cent:above inhabited by the widow of Weyntken Elis and her children and below the Inheriting Gijsbert Bruystensen.
  • After the murder on Alert Gijsbertsz , Metken Walravens continues with four small children. She remarried on February 26, 1615 with Otto Harber ens .This implies the manslaughter in 1613 or 1614 must have taken place .Alerts father, as noted earlier (his bio), is guardian of the children and he concludes the following agreement with Otto Harberens:
  • With this agreement, we get to know three of the four children of Alert and Metken. The fourth child, not mentioned here is already deceased. That Walraven van Hemert, whose wife Mary of Herwijnen is the chatelaine of Drakenburg ,on the side of Gijsbert Goertzen also signs , may indicate that the parcel belongs to the 'loan' of the Drakenburg. Abraham Gijsbertsz signs on the side of Otto Harberens , possible also on behalf of his sister in law. Anthonus Jansz Hol also sign he is the Sherrif of Herwijnen.
  • Further family relationships become apparent from the signing of the marriage contract Alert's son , Geurt Alertsz and Engelken Ariens de Jongh on 3 June 1638.

Death

  • Died before August 9, 1614 in Herwijnen, Gelderland, NTH
