  7. Imputed birth date:
    • Her baptism was on 30 Jun 1771 (not 7 Jul 1771) which is the date of the subsequent record on that page.
    • According to her death notice [familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3Q9M-CSQX-MSYF-T?lang=en] she died on 8 Dec 1847 at age 77 years 8 months and 21 days. This rather exact description puts her birth date as 18 Mar 1770, more than a year before her baptism. Given her birthplace (from her death record) 'Zwart Rivier' a location in the modern Caledon District, a trip to Stellenbosch would have involved a long trip over the mountains on foot or with draft animals (about 50 mi) [1], it is plausible that she would have been baptized as a year old child rather than a new born. I have done what was requested. COGH should now be an active manager. I have uploaded a screengrab of the baptismal entry record from [1], and leave it to COGH to tidy up the profile. Note that there are minor discrepancies in date of birth or baptism. The erroneous 7 Jul is the date of the subsequent entry.

Thanks Dennis, much appreciated! Could you merge the LNAB into the baptismal version of the spelling Gildenhuijsen so that we can have this profile eventually Project Profile Protected please? Thanks, Philip

It is clear to me that the original that we have y with diaresis – typical for Dutch of the era.

I am loathe to change a single letter to two (ij) – even if that is modern Dutch practice. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IJ_(digraph) See also discussion at https://www.wikitree.com/g2g/2046157/can-all-y-characters-be-replaced-by-ij-in-all-profiles and similar. e.g. While I agree that ÿ is wrong, saying y is wrong in Afrikaans would be wrong. ij is very seldom being used in Afrikaans any more. Seeing y on old South African records are just evidence of how it started to replace ij in Afrikaans, so either ij (if there is the faintest hint of a dot) or y (if none) should be considered correct for South African records. However, ÿ is always wrong.

I have now changed LNAB as requested. Profile is now Gildenhuijsen-58 https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Gildenhuijsen-58

If you mean the ÿ - this never existed in Dutch. I agree that this is an abomination - the spelling ij is misunderstood by modern Afrikaners to be the spelling ÿ, but it is not. It has always been the ij (in the far past during the time of the VOC you'll also find the modern day Afrikaans version - y). We transcribe as was intended - see https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:SARoots-Transkripsies (and also this feed on G2G).
