Biography

In all records in which she is known to appear, her name was Elizabeth. She was born about 1776, estimating from her marriage. Her parents owned property in Augusta County, Virginia until 1787. The 1880 census for Eleanor (McNutt) Ewing gives parents birthplace as Virginia. At some point they moved to the area that later became Blount County, Tennessee, which was first settled about 1785, not being safe for some time to come. Although a DAR profile suggests that a James Gillespie resided in North Carolina at the time of the Revolution, no records are cited and the claim is contraindicated by land records in Augusta County. [citation needed]

James McNutt and Joseph Tedford filed a marriage bond for James and Elizabeth Gillespie on 16 February 1794 in Knox County, Tennessee.[1]

She was not counted in the 1830 census with her husband in Blount County. He was in Edgar County, Illinois in the 1840 census. Her son Robert was buried in Edgar County in 1836.

Research Notes

The 1810 and 1820 census records for Blount County were lost. https://tennesseegenealogy.org/statewide/blount-county-tennessee-census-records/. Joseph Tedford's wife was Mary McNutt (?), this is relevant and needs verification. Smith-112541 22:27, 27 January 2024 (UTC)

What is the reliable source for the first name Margaret? Should her first name be changed to Elizabeth, and the middle name deleted? Spratlin-29 19:17, 23 May 2023 (UTC)

Birth
Should the 1765 birth place of Blount, Tennessee instead be Tyrrell County, North Carolina? Spratlin-29 19:17, 23 May 2023 (UTC)

An alternate, unsourced birth place of Augusta County, Colony of Virginia has been suggested.

There were at least 4 different contemporaneous individuals named James Mcnutt who get mixed up. One lived his entire life in Virginia. https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/McNutt-1151. One lived his entire life in Tennessee. https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/McNutt-323. One moved to Alabama. https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/McNutt-98 . One moved to Illinois. The 3 children attached here belong to the one who moved to Alabama. (All statements should start with “it seems like”). The one that moved to Illinois had a son and grandson named Samuel Finley Mcnutt. Does anyone volunteer to deconflate the Mcnutt family? A Margaret Gillespie married a William Mcnutt, which has turned into more confusion. [Edit] This James McNutt tally has risen to 5. There’s one buried not far from Smoking Jimmie.
