Biography

Robert was born in 1854. He is the son of Alexander Gillis and Mary Ann Ellis.

Robert was not in the PEI Baptismal Index, but a Robert, age 25, was with the family in the 1881 census[1], and was the son of Alexander and Mary Ann in the 1891 census.

The marriage was recorded in 1883 of Robert Gillis and Abbiana Currie in Grand River. [2]

In the 1890 Roman Catholic Census of Lot 11, Robert and Abigail (Currie) were living with their three children, James 6, John 4 ([3], and George, 3. A year later, in the 1891 census, Robert Gillis, age 35, in Lot 11 was living with his wife Abbie and parents Alexander (61) and Mary Ann (58) and children James[4], John, George and Mary.

The family emigrated to Middleton, Connecticut, where they were in the 1900 US census. Abbie gave her status as married, although Robert was not in the household after 1900. In 1910, she had been married 28 years, and had had 12 children, of whom 7 were living. The youngest, Blanche (12), Ruth (8) and Frances (5) were born in Connecticutt.

There was a Robert Gillis, a patient born in Canada in an institution for the insane, Middleton, Connecticut, in the 1910 and 1920 US census.

She was Abbie, widow of Robert in a 1925 New Haven city directory at 26 Wheeler. He could be the Robert Gillis who died in 1922 in Connectcut.
