Biography

Birth

Allan was born in Leicester on 6th October 1893 to William and Emma Grant (nee Willis). He was one of eight children.

The birth date has been deduced from the following:-

Civil Registration Dec 1893[1] Baptism 1893. Military records indicate birth around August 1893. 1901 Census indicates birth 1893 in Leicester. 1939 Census 06 Oct 1895[2]

The year in the

Baptism

Allan was baptised in St John the Divine Church, Leicester, on 3rd December 1893. [3]

Education

Allan left Holy Trinity School, Leicester on 26 July 1907. [4]

Travel to Canada

Allan travelled to Canada in 1912 to visit one of his brothers in Toronto. From ships passenger lists at Ancestry.com we can find a record of Allan's outward journey. He travelled from Liverpool to Halifax, Nova Scotia on the S.S. Tunisian and arrived there on 28th April 1912. We see that his ticket was No. 4364 which was prepaid, his was age 18 and his trade was listed as 'clerk'. The reason for his journey was 'to brother'. It appears that he was carrying either £37 or £39, which seems a larger sum than most other passengers on the same page in the list. Ruth Grant and Allan Grant jnr say they have a souvenir letter in a piece of wood that Allan posted from Canada which he sent to one of his sisters (more than likely Hilda)...

In his early life he was a commercial traveller and the 1911 census says that he was a 'commercial traveller in the tobacco trade'.

In 1914 Allan signed up for military service as a Lifeguard in the Household Cavalry and after training he served in France during WWI. His discharge papers show his address as 'The Blue Lion' Thrussington, Leicestershire. I believe that his sister Gertrude was working there.
