Zillah's father, Robert Gray, served in the Revolutionary War from Rowan Co, North Carolina, and when he died in 1799, a guardian was appointed by the court. When she was preparing her clothes for her wedding the guardian told her to buy the best. She paid $25.00 for her hat, $7.50 for her silk hose embroidered from the knee to the ankle, $25.00 for her shoes and the dress was of fine merena cloth, and draped as the style was in 1812. This compiler (Bertha Owen Brockman, granddaughter of Zillah) owns the old antique chest they brought with them for NC, with the wedding finery therein. The chest is sturdy and strong, made of three kinds of wood, apple, walnut and cherry and put together with pegs.
When the family first moved to Cornersville, AR, the wild animals were numerous and when they went to church, the men carried their guns on their shoulders to protect themselves and stacked the guns outside the church during services.
