Biography

John Flint Gregg was born on May 28, 1827, in Ross County, Ohio, the oldest child of Nathan Gregg and Susannah Roughton. He spent his early childhood in Ross County, Ohio. When he was about 13 years old, his parents moved to then Van Buren County, (later Cass County) Missouri in 1840 where he grew to maturity.[1]

He married Mary Jane Page 14 Nov 1847, in Henry County, Missouri.[2][3][4][5][6][7][8] They were the parents of the following children:

  • Sarah "Sallie" J Gregg (1 August 1849-24 August 1900), a cripple, never married[9]
  • William Nathan Gregg (3 November 1851-24 Jan 1934), married 28 January 1877 to Sarah Abbigail Lightle/Lytle[10]

Additional Biographical Information

In 1850, the couple had been married less than three years when the census was taken, showing them living near her uncle Joshua Page, (who performed their marriage ceremony)[1] with a family composed of John Gragg, age 23, male, farmer, no property, born in Ohio; Mary J., age 26, female, born in Missouri; and Sarah J., age 1, female, born in Missouri.[35]

John Flint and Mary Jane Gregg appeared on the census on 3 Jul 1860 in Sugar Creek Township, Wadesburgh, Cass County, Missouri, as John Gragg, age 32, male, white, farmer, personal property valuation $280, born in Ohio; and Mary J., age 34, female, white, born in Kentucky, cannot read/write; Sarah J., age 11, female, white, born in Missouri, attended school during the year; Wm. N. (looks like census taker wrote "M" and tried to erase it), age 8, male, white, born in Missouri; Susan, age 6, female, white, born in Missouri; Elizabeth E., age 3, female, white, born in Missouri; and Columbus Page, age 14, male, white, born in Missouri.[15] Columbus Page was Mary Jane Gregg's brother; their mother died at his birth. Their father had just died in 1859, leaving a widow with four half-siblings of hers to feed. Apparently Mary Jane was taking care of her brother until he could be on his own.[1]

When General Ewing's Order No. 11 took effect in 1863, the Greggs and many related families moved across the Missouri/Kansas state border, into Miami, Franklin and nearby counties. It was a forced removal, with Union soldiers allowing little time to pack up and leave. No one was allowed to live in Cass County except in Harrisonville, and houses were burned to prevent their return. Not all the families moved back after the war.[1]

John Flint had served 10 months with the Missouri state militia (cavalry) when he registered for the draft in 1863 during the American Civil War.[29] Mary Jane Gregg's application for pension for her husband's Civil War service was refused. The file gives John F. Gregg serving in Co. G 7th SM Cav., MO; says he deserted the Army.[36] His family says he got sick toward the end of the war, and was told to go home and stay until called. The war ended and he was never called, so he was not mustered out, and thus was entered as AWOL.[1]

The family was still living in Kansas when the 1865 census was taken May 20.[37] They are listed as John Gregg, age 38, male, farmer, personal property valued at $625, born in Ohio, married; M. J. Gregg, age 43, female, housekeeper, born in Kentucky, married, cannot read/write; S. J. Gregg, age 15, female, housekeeper, born in Missouri, single; W. W. Gregg, age 13, male, born in Missouri, single; Susan Gregg, age 11, female, born in Missouri, single; E. E. Gregg, age 8, female, born in Missouri, single; G. W. Gregg, age 5, male, born in Missouri, single; and Ellen Poore, age 26, female, housekeeper, personal property valuation $150, born in Ohio, single.[18] Ellen Poore is John Flint Gregg's widowed sister.[1]

John Flint and Mary Jane had moved back to Cass County and appeared on the census in 1870 in Sugar Creek Township, Post Office, Dayton, as John F. Gregg, age 43, male, white, farmer, real estate valuation $1,500, personal property valuation $529, born in Ohio; Mary J. Gregg, age 47, female, white, keeps house, born in Kentucky, cannot write; Sarah J., age 21, female, white, at home, born in Missouri, cannot write; William, age 19, male, white, at home, born in Missouri, attended school, cannot write; Elizabeth, age 13, female, white, at home, born in Missouri, attended school, cannot write; and Geo. W., age 10, male, white, at home, born in Missouri, attended school, cannot write.[38]

They appeared on the census in 1880 in Sherman Township, Cass County, Missouri, as John F. Gregg, white, male, age 53, married, farmer, born in Ohio, both parents born in Ohio; Mary J., white, female, age 57, wife, married, keeps house, deaf and dumb, cannot write, born in Kentucky, both parents born in North Carolina; Sarah J., white, female, age 31, daughter, single, cannot write, born in Missouri, father born in Ohio, mother born in North Carolina; Elizabeth E., white, female, age 21, daughter, single, born in Missouri, father born in Ohio, mother born in North Carolina; George W., white, male, age 19, single, son, works on farm; born in Missouri, father born in Ohio, mother born in North Carolina; Wm. R. Page, white, male, age 9, nephew, single, attended school, born in Missouri, father born in Missouri, mother born in Arkansas.[39] William R. Page is Mary Jane Gregg's nephew, son of her half-brother, Jasper Page, who was deceased, and she was apparently again taking care of another child in need. His mother, Rosanna or Rosa (Parkerson) Page was unable to provide for him.[1]

He was called John Flint to distinguish him from another John Gregg in the community, John Flat Gregg, son of a Don and Mary Gregg.[1]) John Flint Gregg liked to drink whiskey and play the fiddle. After the war John Flint would go to a dance to help provide the music, and might be gone a month or more. His wife and children took care of the farm work while he was gone. He would come home for a short time, and then take off again with whatever money the family had, leaving the family to fend for themselves.[3] His granddaughter, Daisy Gregg, thought he was wonderful when she was a child, but her father (William Nathan) didn't have a very high opinion of him. When she was grown up, she understood why her father felt the way he did.[40] He died on 16 Jan 1888 in Cass County, Missouri, at age 60 and was buried in Parker-Gregg Cemetery[41]a few miles southwest of Creighton, Missouri.[42][43]

The Gregg families of Dallas County, Missouri and the Gregg families of Cass County, Missouri, in the main were related, as well as a branch in Polk County, Missouri. The progenitor of the Dallas County, Missouri families was Jacob Gregg and his wife Susanna Underwood. Their son, Amos, died before their father, leaving a will in Ross County, Ohio in which he mentioned his brothers John, William, Aaron, and Joseph and their sister Rachel Sesman. (Will Books ABCD page 117 Ross County, Ohio, 1817). In November 1834 Joseph, Aaron and John deed one another their parts of their father Jacob Gregg's land. Their mother died in 1834, with her probate records filed in Volume 29 page 312 of Ross County, Ohio. Some of the descendants of all this family intermarried with Cozad, Raines, Timmons and Lytle families. In 1840 the son John Gregg moved to then Van Buren, now Cass County, Missouri with some of his grown children.

Aaron, son of Jacob and Susanna (Underwood) Gregg had a son Nathan who went to Polk County, Missouri, where he died 1867. Another son (of Aaron) William was in Dallas County, Missouri in 1850,

In the Henry County/Cass County Missouri area, lived another John Gregg, always called John Flat Gregg, son of Dan and Mary Gregg, I have not been able to identify them. John Flint was always called John Flint Gregg, (Gregg-701) since they lived in the same vicinity and married into the same families. I am a descendant through his son William Nathan Gregg, who married Sarah Abbigail Lightle. Their daughter Daisy Isabell Gregg, born 1879, is my grandmother. Sarah Abbigail Lightle was born in Polk County, Missouri, where her parents, Job and his wife Susanna Gregg lived in 1856. Job Lightle's mother, Abagail (Cozad) Lightle, married Jacob Gregg, and was in Cass County, Missouri in 1860. Jacob Gregg was the son of John Gregg, son of Jacob Gregg and his wife Susanna Underwood.

As you see, it gets confusing. I hope some of this helps. I interviewed older members of this family, read much census, many deeds in Cass County, MO and many marriage records in Cass County, & Henry County in Missouri and in Ross County Ohio, and am trying to get all the proofs in the correct places.
