Charles was born on 3 Jul 1932. He was the son of William Ernest Guy (1904–1982) and Maud Margery Walker. His parents were married on 28 November 1929 in Durban, Natal, South Africa. Charles had one sister.
Charles married Marlene Janette Hunkin (1936-2010)] on 31 January 1959 in Kensington, Johannesburg, Transvaal. He was 26 years old at the time of her marriage. They had two children together:
