William, born in 1806, was the son of Rev. William Gwynne and Eliza Nelson. After studying medicine at Trinity College, Dublin, he emigrated to York (Toronto), Upper Canada, in 1832, and began a successful practice there. He also became a professor of anatomy and served on the Medical Board of Upper Canada.
In 1835 he married Anne Murray Powell, a granddaughter of William Dummer Powell. They had three sons who died in infancy and a daughter, Elizabeth.
He died onboard the steamer Miramichi in 1875 while travelling to New Brunswick for health reasons.
