Biography

Of 25 Glasgow Terrace, Grafton, Auckland, New Zealand.

Background

Hannah Maria Hagger was the youngest daughter and child of Charlotte Elizabeth White and Captain Thomas West Haggar, Veterinary Surgeon and Officer in the 8th Madras Light Cavalry attached to the Body-Guard of His Excellency the Governor of Madras. She was born on 20 August 1853 in Perth, Western Australia.

In about September 1853 her father left Perth for Sydney, his wife and children following in November. However, shortly prior to their arrival in Sydney he died suddenly on 14 November, after a short and painful illness, at the residence of his brother-in-law, James Charles White, Wall's Court Lodge, Balmain.

Marriages and family

In 1876 she married 1ly Edward Dean, with issue four children. He died in 1883.

She married 2ly [Sydney Stanley?] McPherson, with issue four children.

Death and burial

She died on 2 July 1943, aged 89. She was buried on 3 July 1943 in Purewa Cemetery, Auckland, with her elder sister, Mary Ann Elizabeth Hagger (1842-1927), Block D Row 10 Plot 96.

Notes

Although her husband, Edward Dean, died on 31 December 1882, Dean was the last name at birth registered for four additional children born to her between 1885 and 1890. Edward Dean was posthumously listed as the father of Frank Vivian Dean on "his son's" war service record, however Frank Vivian Dean was the third additional child born to his widow in 1889.[1]

Name confirmed by son's WW1 service record.[2]
