Biography

Elizabeth Hamlin married Nicholas Jarrett/Gerrard. The book "FIrst Families of America" says she was probably the daughter of Stephen Hamblyn, the Burgess of Charles City County. It also indicates they were married in 1713. Elizabeth was too young to be the daughter of Stephen Hamblyn, the Burgess of Charles City County. She was probably a granddaughter or great granddaughter.

Nicholas Jarratt/Jarrard appears to be the son of Henry Jarrard who died in 1689. Nicholas was a minor and asked his brother Fernando to be his guardian in 1692, even though he owned half of his father's estate. - From the book: "The Spirit in the South". Nicholas Wyatt gave Nicholas Gerrard some land in Martin’s Brandon Parish in March of 1694. It is not clear why he gave him this land. Perhaps he married Nicholas Wyatt’s daughter.

Nicholas Jarrett who married Elizabeth Hamlin had 5 1/2 children when he died; Nicholas Jr, Thomas, John, Sarah, Aimee and Jane. Elizabeth was pregnant with Jane. Since they were married in 1713, it appears only the youngest 2 or 3 children were Elizabeth's. Elizabeth and Nicholas lived on a 400 acre plantation in Lawnes Creek Parish of Surry County Virginia. Nicholas wrote his will on 3 June 1718 and it was probated on 16 July 1718, indicating he died in June or July of 1718. James Mize and Elizabeth were married about 1720. Since Elizabeth was still of child bearing age when she married James, we can assume she was about 25 to 30 years old or born between 1690 and 1695. Some say she was born about 1675, but she could not have been 45 years old when she married James Mize since they had at least 5 children together. This is an attempt to place all the Jarrett children as hers, since Nicholas Jr appears to have been born in 1700 or before.

James Mize and his wife Elizabeth sold 400 acres in Lawnes Creek Parish and the labor of one Negro Woman named Mary to Daniel Turner for 5 pounds on 19 July 1721. The sale of the land was witnessed by William Winkeles, Jeremiah Mize, James Mize, George Walker and Elizabeth Mize. The 400 acres was the land that was to be given to Nicholas Jarratt Junior upon the death of Elizabeth according to Nicholas Jarrett's will.

James and Elizabeth moved to Prince George County Virginia about the time they were married. They moved to the part of Brunswick County that became Lunenburg County Virginia and received a land grant in 1728. Elizabeth lost her second husband James Mize in 1761 while still living in Lunenburg County. She is not mentioned again and probably died in Lunenburg in 1762 or 1763. Elizabeth had 5 more children that survived to adulthood with James Mize. They are Stephen, Hannah, James, William and Sarah.

Research Notes

Elizabeth was not the daughter of Stephen Hamlin Jr (bef.1638-bef.1687). He died three years before she is estimated to have been born. There are no records supporting this relationship. She is being removed as daughter. Further research needs to be done to determine her correct parents and more accurate birth date. (Strutton-11 18:46, 3 January 2021 (UTC))
