Biography

Polly Hancox was born 21 Apr 1789 @ Stonington, Connecticut, the eighth child of Edward Hancox III (1744-1837) & Sarah (Sheffield) Hancox (abt.1754-abt.1802).

She married, probably about January 1808, Charles Breed (1783-1858). They had 5 children ^[1]:

1. Charles Breed (1809-)
2. Mariah (Breed) Rickett (1811-); married Henry Rickett
3. Joseph Holmes Breed (1813-abt.1895); married Catherine Peek Green
4. Roswell Breed (1815-1891); married 1) Amelia Fleming; 2) Ann Lamb
5. Sally (Breed) Lewis (abt.1818-abt.1894); married Robert Lewis

This family went to Venango County, Pennsylvania in 1818. They, along with Charles's parents and some of his siblings, were among the very first settlers of the northwestern Pennsylvania region, which at that time consisted of woodland wilderness ^[2].

Polly (Hancox) Breed died 10 Jun 1843 in Venango County, Pennsylvania.

Notes

Polly may have been her given name. Whereas Polly typically is a nickname for Mary, there is no evidence of the name Mary being used in reference to this person.

No specific marriage date has been pinpointed for the marriage of this Charles Breed with Polly Hancox. All we have as evidence are three public notices of differing dates in 1808 which announce that they were married ^[3],^[4],^[5]. Only one of those references states where they were married, in Norwich.
