Research Notes
Birth Location
Daniel's father spent nearly all of his adult life living on property located on Walker's Creek in what is today known as Bland County, Virginia[4]. In 1831, when his father signed his will, this location was in Wythe County, Virginia[3]. Daniel was born in 1797, after Wythe County became effective in 1790, before his father signed his will, and well before the establishment of Bland County in 1861. Based on the location of Bland County, where his father was living, and Daniel's birth year, he was born in Wythe County, Virginia[5].
Death
This profile previously indicated that Daniel passed away about 1850 in California, but no source was provided in support of those details. The same death details appear on Daniel's profile within the FamilySearch communal tree. Within that FamilySearch profile, there is only a single source for the death details: a record from Ancestry's Family Data Collection - Individual Records. This particular source is deemed unreliable and is recommended to not be used on WikiTree profiles. Until other sources emerge that provide reliable details about Daniel's death, his death date and location should simply be unknown.
War of 1812
A record for the military service of a Daniel Harmon(d) during the War of 1812 was previously attached to this profile as an inline source for the following biography text:
This researcher does not believe this military service record is for the Daniel Harman represented by this profile, for the following reasons:
Location - The individual served in the 2nd Regiment (Thomas') of the Massachusetts Militia[6]. It seems unlikely that the Daniel Harman represented by this profile would have traveled to Massachusetts for his military service.
Date - The War of 1812 began on 18 June 1812 and ended on 17 February 1815[7]. The Daniel Harman represented by this profile would have been 14 years old when the war began and 17 years old when it ended. These ages are likely too young for someone's military service, especially given the location of the military unit.
Name - The name of the individual cited in the military service record was "Daniel Harmond". The record also noted that the original was filed under the name "Daniel Harmon".
