The son of Cutliff and Susan Fouts Harman, Eli was born in what would become Watauga County. He married Rhoda Dyer née Dugger abt. 1818 and they had 6 children: Malden Cicero, David Tucker, Susan, Emily, Drewry Calvin, and Wiley A.
Emily married John Cromwell Whittington and they moved to MO, where Emily died abt. 1844.[2]

His grave marker spells his last name as "Herman." The marker looks like it's relatively new, so additional sources will be needed to confirm his Last Name at Birth.
