Biography

U.S. Southern Colonies Project logo
William Hawkins Jr. was a Virginia colonist.

William Hawkins was born about 28 Feb 1586/87 at Plymouth, Devonshire, England. He passed away in 1655.[1] Two baptismal records are found on familysearch.org which may or may not be this William:

  • Parish Register, St. Andrew's, Plymouth, England: 29 Feb 1587, Hawkins, Willm. s. of Willm. [2]
  • Parish Register, St. Andrew's, Plymouth, England: 2 May 1599, Hawkins, Willm. s. of Wm. gent [3]

Said to have arrived on an immigrant ship in 1636 at Charles River County (became York in 1643), Virginia. The name of the ship has not been located and the exact date is unconfirmed. The only confirmed date is the recording of the grant for his headright in 1637. His arrival could have been several years earlier.

  • Hawkins William 1637, sponsor Theodore Moyser, James City - - [4] [5]

This was the second son that William *the father* named William. He arrived in Virginia in 1636. He left his family in England when he came to Virginia. He landed at Lower Norfolk (or James City) and went to Poquoson River area where he bought land adjoining Peter Rigby. This was also the same area where his half brother Thomas lived and owned land . This is almost the exact site of present day Williamsburg. Later his wife Sarah and children came to join him.[6]

Marriage & Children

William married Sarah (Kahn) Hawkins about 1610 in England. No marriage record has yet been found. Children listed but unconfirmed:

  1. Thomas Hawkins, d bef 1655 (?)
  2. Sarah Hawkins
  3. Alice Margaret/Millicent Hawkins
  4. John Hawkins

Death & Legacy

William Hawkins, of the parish and County of York, wrote his will on 24 March 1654/5 and it was recorded 25 June 1655 at parish and County of York. Abstract:

Very sick and weak.
Right much religious preamble.
To be buried at descretion of wife Sarah Hawkins. Whole estate to her. After her decease all to "my sonn in law Argall Blackstone".
After wife's death Argall Blackstone to give the Churchwardens of York parish 1500 lb tobo for "a silver Flaggon bought with the produce". "which Flaggon to be and remaine to and for the use of the Inhabitants of York Parrish in the Church belonging thereto att Sacraments and other necessarie times and occasions"
To John Wright son of Edward Wright a heifer.
Signed: The mark of William WH Hawkins
Wit: John x Humphreyes, Jer: Hope[9]

It is generally presumed that Argall Blackstone was the husband of William's daughter Alice Margaret (Millicent) and that John Wright was married to daughter Sarah Hawkins. These relationships are unconfirmed.

From references in the Timeline to William's guardianship of Argall Blackstone, it appears that Argall/Argyle Blackstone may have been a stepson and not son-in-law, since the term son-in-law could apply to either relationship at that time.[10]

It does appear from the fact they are not included in the abstract of his will that William's sons Thomas and John did not survive him.

David: I'm researching my 9th great grandfather William Hawkins III and see that you are the Manager of his Wiki account Hawkins-350. I read the following paragraph when I was researching other websites and I cannot find the name of the ship he landed in Virginia around 1636 sponsored by Thomas Moyer. Have you been able to discover the ship name? Thank you Richard W. Hawkins, [email address removed]

Is there any documentation that William Hawkins Jr., immigrant to York County, Virginia Colony, was the son of William Amadas Hawkins? I have yet to find a definite connection.
William Hawkins was born about 28 Feb 1586/87 at Plymouth, Devonshire, England. He passed away in 1655. [1][2] [3] [4] Arrived on the IMMIGRANT SHIP in 1636 at York, Virginia.

I'm trying to discover the real name of the IMMIGRANT SHIP. William Hawkins III is my 9th great grandfather.

According to the rootsweb Hawkins history http://freepages.rootsweb.com/~markfreeman/history/hawkins.html this William Hawkins did NOT have a son William, their children were John, Sara, Millicent (who is apparently Alice Margaret) and Thomas. I'm trying to clear up some puritan great migration data so your thoughts on this profile would be appreciated.

I am in Southern Colonies project, Came upon this profile working my brother in laws line. This is my brother in laws 9th great grandfather. He is also related to me before this man, back in England at the surname Beaumont, But whats weirder is, my family interacted with his family in lawsuits and such, {smith vs wood} is some. back then, and are all related at smith town.

He married back into my family? just like my Dad with my Mom who were 6th cousins. Both of them are Beaumont decedents. Is it colonial magnetism. or reincarnation?

like Beaumont County's or like Beaumont Texas. All named for the Beaumont's of England. He born in Colorado his family settled Colorado. My family settled 5 states. But his family and my family kept marring Irish decedents. That's it. and this guy was an aristocrat, and my grandfather was too. sir Andrew woods or who ever. Would not surprise me if a lot of my ancestors came over on this mans ship or at least with his connections..

* Joan Amados (1465 - 1554).

John (Hawkins) lived at Tavistock and married Joan, the daughter and heiress of William Amadas, Esquire, of Launceston, who was Sergeant-at-Arms to Henry VIII. William married Margaret Hawkins, but it is not known how she was related to John. It seems possible that this marriage led to the introduction of the Hawkins family to the court of Henry VIII . . . He and Joan had three children: William, Henry and Agnes. [1]

There is none, and I have not used it. It is on his fathers profile but that is not mine.

But Gerald, what is the evidence that William used this Amadas name during his lifetime?

* Cleaned profile as best I could. I believe I adopted the profile and later it was merged. William is the 10th great grandfather of Gerald.

  • Ancestor of William Hawkins. William Amados (1420 - 1467). William Amadas was in the employment of the crown. William and Margaret Hawkins are the father of John Amadas, born before 1489, at Court Gate, Tavistock, Devon. (as published in The History of Parliament: the House of Commons 1509-1558, ed. S.T. Bindoff, 1982, Available from Boydell and Brewer) Their son, John, rose to be one of the King's serjeants-at-arms and a member of Parliment.

Where does Amadas come from? It's no where in the narrative and middle names were not used in England in that era.

Hawkins-662 and Hawkins-350 appear to represent the same person because: Alice Hawkins was the nickname of Millicent (Hawkins) Blackstone; she is the daughter of William Hawkins and Sarah (Khan) Hawkins.
