Matilda was born abt 1813, per her tombstone on the Old Scruggs farm on Rt 670, outside of Gretna, Pittsylvania Co, VA.. She was the daughter of John Hines and Sytha Lester.
. She married Thomas B. Simpson 19 Dec 1831 (14 Dec 1831 license date). Tilda outlived her husband Thomas B. Simpson by 30 years.Thomas died in 1858,
. She and Thomas Simpson had 10 children. They children were John, Jesse, Thomas "Meekin", Minerva S, Elizabeth (Betty) Ann, Isabella V, Mary B, Vidella Jane, James P, and Adolphus. Adolphus was only 2 when his father died, as showin in the 1860 Federal Census of Pittsylvania County, Virginia[1]
In the 1870 Federal Census she remained on the farm, with 3 of her children, Minerva, Vidella, and James P. No mention is made of Adolphus[2]
In the 1880 census she is still on the farm, but the head of household was now Robert C. Scruggs, husband of her daughter, Vidella "Della". Her age is correct in the 1880 Census[3].
Matilda Hines Simpson died in !898 and her obituary is found in a book titled "Tracks along the Staunton" by Diane Popek, published in 1968, which is a collection of articles written by Ms Popek for the Alta Vista newspaper, and later compiled into a book.
