Matthias Hoffer is a DAR Patriot Ancestor, A056315.
Hoffer, Matthias was a patriot in Pennsylvania. He was a private in the 9th Battalion Lancaster Co, PA and he paid the supply tax in 1779. Spouses: 1) Maria Wohlweider 2) Anna Groh. Children in patriot file: Rudolf who m. Mary Catherine; Christian who m. Catherine Keener, George who m. Catherine Hershey, Maria Barbara who m. Daniel Poorman, John who m. Barbara Long. Jacob who m, Catherine Levengood, Magdalena who m. John Arminschong Long. [1]
Revolutionary War Soldier. Patriarch of some branches of the Hufford/Huffard family. He was my grandfather, with four "greats" in front of it. Landed on the "Loyal Judith" in Philadelphia September 2, 1743; married Maria Wohlweider, by whom he had 6 sons and 6 daughters between 1746 and 1765, and lived near Manheim, Lancaster County, PA. After Maria's death from smallpox on January 25, 1778, he married Anna Groh and produced 5 sons and a daughter between 1779 and 1785. Despite advanced age Matthias served as a Pennsylvania Militiaman in the Revolution (proof of which I have via DAR records) (served 1777-1780, 1st Co., 9th. Battalion, Lancaster Co. Militia). (I THINK he was at Valley Forge with Washington; Maria's smallpox was caught from British Hessian mercenaries quartered in the home). His oldest son Rudolph Hoffer (1747-1826) lived in Brooke County, VA (now WV); Rudolph's fourth child and third son was Henry Hoffer (1781-1850), who became Henry Huffard and moved to Wytheville, VA after serving in the War of 1812...Henry is patriarch of the "Wytheville" line of the family. As to religion, Matthias was Lutheran, Rudolph United Brethren, and the Huffords predominantly Methodist, but with all varieties of Christian faith represented. Reference: "Genealogy of Matthias Hoffer and His Descendants in the United States of America" (1868), by Isaac Hoffer; revised by Paul Huffard (1945). I won't loan-out my copy, but will gladly look-up anything for you. The DAR library in Washington has it [2].
