Friederika Hogue was a Black Sea German.

Fredricka "Rica" Hogue/Hogk was born about 1876 in Annental, Russian Empire. She was the daughter of Johann Hogk (1836 - ) and Maria Magdalena Koegele (1838 - ).

Rica married Johannes Schlittenhardt in the Russian Empire before 1897. They had at least five children, all born in the Russian Empire.

  1. Jakob Schlittenhardt b. ~1897 Annental, Russian Empire, d. 26 Jan 1905 Annental, Ukraine
  2. Philipp Schlittenhardt b. 13 Jun 1897 Johannestal, Odessa, d. 20 Feb 1983 Bismarck, North Dakota, US[1]
  3. Christina Schlittenhart b. 9 Apr 1899 Johannestal, Odessa, Russia,[2] d. 28 Sep 1921 Hazelton, North Dakota, US[3]
  4. Johannes "John" Schlittenhart b. 2 Mar 1902 Annental, d. 11 Nov 1921 Bismarck, North Dakota[4]
  5. Magdalena "Maggie" Schlittenhart b. 1904 Odessa, Russia[2]

It is said she died in 1905 aboard a ship.

Research Notes

From a descendant:

Fredricka Houge Schlittenhardt, a 28 year old mother who desired a better life in America with her family. Although she lost her life on the way to America, her courage allowed for her decendants to live a better life.

I know that Fredricka Houge Schlittenhardt:

  • was married to Johannes Schlittenhardt who was born in Annenthal, Russia on 27-Jan-1873.
  • Johannes and Fredricka had 4 or 5 children.
  • She would have been born about about 1877, she was listed as 28 years of age on the ship record in 1905.
  • Johannes, Fredericka, Philip, Christina, Johannes, and Magdalena all boarded the ship SS Corinthian in Liverpool England on 7-Dec-1905.
  • They were all hospitalized during the journey and my grandfather remembered that his mom died aboard ship and was buried at sea.
  • The SS Corinthian arrived at Halifax, Nova Scotia on 18-Dec-1905.
  • From what I have been able to find in the ship records, I have not been able to confirm that she did die at sea.
  • The US Index to Alien Arrivals at Canadian Atlantic and Pacific Seaport, 1904-1944 on ancestry.com only lists Johann, Philip, Christina, Johannes, and Magdalena.
  • It is my understanding that the German spellings for Houge are Hock or Hogk.
  • My mother passed away last year at age 99, but she remembered that her dad's aunt was Christina Houge Grenz, who we believe to be Fredricka's sister.
  • Christina Houge Grenz was born 17-Oct-1866 in Grossliebental, Russia.

Theory After corresponding with one of the authors of the "Odessa 3 Searches" page, Curt Renz, I put on the the german spelling HOGK for the last name of Friederika. Further I learned, that she had siblings, Friedrich, Christiana, Christian and Sabina, so I go on searching for sources for them. Her parents possibly were Johann Hogk and Magdalena Kögeler. This is speculative, until I find a reliable source. The fact, that her children are named first after her husbands parents, and the last two after her parents, seems to be a big hint to me. If I am right, her birth date was earlier than recorded in the passenger list, already in 1863. {http://odessa3.org/collections/stpete/gros/link/gros186b.txt} [Brandes-347]
