"From the age of 10 years, Miles Hollister lived most of the time away from home, working at different places in summers and attending school in winters. In 1846, he went to live with his eldest brother, Hannibal, in St. Clair County, Mich., attending school in Port Huron in winters. Sickness obliged him to leave Michigan, and he returned to New York. While at school there he was called on to undertake the difficult task of teaching an unmanageable school at East Otto Corners. He was advised not to begin teaching school there, as for 5 years there had been trouble with the school. He however resolved to do it, and although he taught several years after that, he declares that he never gave his patrons or himself better satisfaction than that winter. In 1855, he settled at Faribault, Minn., on a farm, which he left the next year to engage in the saw-and-grist-mill business until the financial crash of 1857. On the first organization of townships in Minnesota, he was elected chairman supervisor of Warsaw, and spent the summer in surveying roads. In the fall of 1858, he was elected clerk of the District Court for Rice County, and in 1861 he was reelected, having in the meantime been twice elected town clerk of Faribault. In 1862, under the call for "six hundred thousand more," he enlisted and assisted in raising a company, and was commissioned first-lieutenant of Co. B, 8th Minn. Vol. Inf. He served about 2 years on the frontier, against the Indians, acting at different 'times as commissary, quartermaster, adjutant, and as commandant of Fort Ripley. In the fall of 1864, his regiment went south and participated in the campaign against the Confederate Gen. Hood, in Tennessee. On the reorganization of the 23d Army Corps, his regiment was assigned to the First Brigade, 1st Div. 23d A. C., Gen. F. H. Ruger, command ing, who assigned him to duty as ordnance officer on his staff the last of Dec., 1864, in which capacity he acted until April 10, 1865, when he was relieved at his own request to take the captaincy of Co. K, 123d U. S. C. I., having participated in several battles and skirmishes, the hottest of which was that of Wilkinson's Pike, near Murfreesboro, Tenn., where his regiment lost ninety-six men in killed and wounded in about twenty minutes, and that of Dover Swamp, or Wise's Forks, in North Carolina, in March, 1865, where, owing to Capt. Hollister's train getting swamped, his division came near getting out of ammunition, and would have done so had not a train belonging to Gen. Carter's division opportunely fallen into his hands. On his way to join his new regiment, he arrived in Washington the morning of the day on which President Lincoln was assassinated. He joined his regiment in May and was mustered out, by reason of close of the war, Oct. 24, 1865, having commanded his company and regiment, and acted as commissioner to appraise the damage done to property by a New-York cavalry regiment, and as commissary at Bowling Green, Ky. He arrived home in Nov., 1865, sick with chronic hepatitis, from which he has never fully recovered. He has since engaged in milling and mercantile business, and has held the office of register of deeds, in 1867-8, and alderman of Faribault, where he now resides."^[1]
