Biography

In 1666, she was named as "my daughter Alice Hopton" in the will of her father. [1]

Nicholas Jones married Alice Hopton at Canon Frome on 17 Apr 1683. [2] "Nicholas Jones of Abergevanney in the County of Monmouth Esq and Madame Alice Hopton, of the parish of Cannon Froome in the County of Hereforde, were married April 17th 1683". Their children baptised at Cannon Frome included:

  • William (1684)
  • Deborah (1685)
  • Edward (1686)

After her first husband's death, she married James Morgan, Bt. Their marriage was recorded in the Catholic Register of Abergavenny which shows the marriage took place on 27 Oct 1695 "Jacobus Morgan, miles et Barrt. & Allicia Jones" (Catholic Record Society, Miscellanea XIV, London 1927, which records also show the death on 30 Apr 1718 of Sir James Morgan, Baronet).

Research Notes

It has been claimed that Alice Hopton was the mother of Edward Morgan, an immigrant ancestor of early American frontiersman Daniel Boone,[3] but this has been disproved.[4][5]

Since Edward Morgan of Gwynedd was already an adult in America well before 1695 (having already appeared on the Blackwell Rent Roll in the 1680's, and having children with recorded birthdates as early as 1691), the alleged father-son relationship between Sir James Morgan and Edward Morgan of Gwynedd is chronologically impossible.

Hopton-64 and Hopton-47 do not represent the same person because: Not the same parents
Hopton-153 and Hopton-47 appear to represent the same person because: same/similar dates, places and dates are estimates from unsourced family trees, clearly intended to be the same person

Hopton-101 and Hopton-47 appear to represent the same person because: Same person - dates and locations are different but this is clearly the result of ancestry trees and unreliable information.

Alice Hopton was the daughter of Sir Edward Hopton and his wife Deborah Hatton. See here https://archive.org/stream/cu31924092524382#page/n190/mode/1up I strongly doubt she died in Philadelphia
