Karl was the first of eleven children born to Charles Edwin Hughey and Constance Caroline Ardley Blenkarn. He was a butcher for B.R. Youngman in Columbus, Kansas. Tragedy took his life early.
"The Pittsburg Daily" dated July 5, 1909 Headlines read:
"ONE DEAD FEW HURT - THE TOLL OF FOURTH OF JULY ACCIDENTS IN PITTSBURG - ONE BOY SHOT HIMSELF - CARL HUGHEY WAS ALMOST INSTANTLY KILLED WITH A REVOLVER BY ACCIDENT.
Carl Hughey son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Hughey of 601 East NInth Street was almost instantly killed yesterday afternoon at 3:30 o'clock at the parents home, by the accidental discharge of a .38 caliber revolver in his own hands. He was but twenty years old. The bullet entered the left nostril and ranged upward and back lodging at the base of the brain. Death resulted in about ten minutes after the accident. Only one witness to the shooting was present at the time. Clyde, the next younger brother of the deceased. The young man had come from Columbus unexpectedly, and on arriving at home found his parents and other members of the family, with the exception of his younger brother, away from home. The two brothers went into the house through a window, and Clyde was engaged in getting his brother something to eat when the accident happened. Carl and Clyde had previously talked of how many fireworks they would have, the latter showing him a number of giant firecrackers kept in the dresser drawer. Carl examined them and noticed his father's .38 caliber revolver lying in the drawer. He took the weapon out and opened it, throwing out the shells. He then snapped it several times, against the protestations of the other brother and finally put the shells back into the gun. The gun was snapped just as the brother turned around. He noticed his brother looking down the barrel and had just turned around again when the report followed. The wounded boy started to fall and was caught by his brother and carried to a chair. Water was secured but he saw that his brother was badly wounded. Leaving him for a minute he called a neighbor for help. Dr. Moberg was summoned, but the young man had breathed his last before the physician could arrive. Bowman's ambulance was called and the body was taken to their undertakers parlor and word was sent to the family who were at the park. They were not found until nearly six o'clock, and on reaching home found the report all too true. The mother is almost prostrated with grief. The deceased was 20 years of age and for several months had been working at the meat market in Columbus. He was expected home yesterday, but not arriving by noon the rest of the family had gone to the park for the remainder of the day. He was a hard working young man with a character above reproach, sober and industrious and one of the most highly respected young men of Columbus. The father is foreman at the Kansas office and at one time worked on the Headlight force. He has resided in Pittsburg not less than a year."
