Biography

Joseph Ingham (aka Hingham, Hingam), Sr., "weaver," was born about 1630, based on his 1655 marriage. Norman Ingham, Ph.D., author of Joseph Ingham of Saybrook, Connecticut, says he was in Saybrook, Connecticut, by the late 1650s, and is considered one of the founders of Saybrook given his early residence there, but no earlier trace of him has been found in New England. He conjectures that Joseph may have come over from England at a young age with another family, perhaps as a servant, and was welcomed at Saybrook in his capacity as a weaver, but is dismissive of attempts by earlier researchers to link him to English clothmakers of Yorkshire, Lancashire and Lincolnshire.[1][2]

He married first, Sarah Bushnell, daughter of Deacon Francis and Mary (Grombridge) Bushnell, in either Saybrook or Guilford, on June 20, 1655, as recorded in the Vital Records of Saybrook: "Josef Hingham was married to Sarah Bushnell the 20 of June in the year 1655." Sarah died about 1683.[1][2][3]

Joseph Ingham ("Bingham") took the freeman's oath at Saybrook on September 9, 1668, along with twelve others. He appears on a list of men already made free dated "4 8mo. [October 4,] 1669." He was selectman 1669/70, 1678 and 1683.[1][4]

He married second about 1684, Mary Attwell, widow of Benjamin Atwell of New London, Connecticut. This marriage lasted only a couple of years. In 1686, probably immediately after their son, Benoni, was born at New London, she refused to return to Joseph in Saybrook. Joseph later petitioned for divorce on October 2, 1695, but it was not granted, nor did Mary ever return.[1][5]

Joseph's Ingham died in Saybrook on December 28, 1710, as is recorded in the Vital Records of Saybrook: "Joseph Ingham, Sr., died the 28th day of De— 1710."[1][6] According to his Find A Grave: Memorial #174886658, he is buried in Cypress Cemetery in "Old Saybrook," but it appears that there is no gravestone extant.

Children With Sarah Bushnell

The children of Joseph and Sarah (Bushnell) Ingham, probably all born in Saybrook:[1]

  1. Joseph (Josef) Ingham, Jr., born August 30, 1656; died unmarried 1691-1693.[7]
  2. Sarah Ingham, born June 11, 1658; married, September 23, 1686, Abraham Chalker (his 2nd wife); died September 11, 1687.[8][9][10]
  3. Samuel Ingham, born c1661; married, November 3, 1686, Rebecca Williams.[1][11]
  4. John Ingham, born say 1663-65; died unmarried 1689-1691.[1]
  5. [Daughter] Ingham, born 1660s; living on Long Island in 1693 (per brother Joseph's probate), thus probably an adult and married by then.

  7. Susannah Ingham, born 1660s or 1670s; died unmarried November 17, 1707.[12]

  2. Benoni Ingham, born June 10, 1686, New London

Ingham-128 and Ingham-27 appear to represent the same person because: looks like a match to me... hope it works for you...
